Nick Murphy 'Sanity' by babybaby
Promonews - 25th Mar 2019
Swedish directing team babybaby send Nick Murphy - formerly known as Chet Faker - off into the desert, and through a dreamscape of floating chairs, clones, and eventually, fragments of his own memories.
It's a relentless expression of mental turmoil that gets to the heart of Murphy's new song Sanity. And it highlights the reality-warping talents, through both in-camera and post effects, of babybaby - aka Josefin Malmen and David Strindberg.
BABYBABY:
We liked the idea of coming back to the rotating fan, like a mind constantly spinning.
"It was an open brief and the track is called Sanity, so… inspired by the desert vibe of the track and the obvious lyrical clues: When you question your sanity and what you think you know, only realising the more you think about it the less you understand and the less rational your mind seems to become. Reality and ideas merging.
"So that’s what we decided to do; merge mental impressions with tangible worlds. Starting off at a more sensible note in a motel only to soon have stuff leave and appear elsewhere, in this case the desert. But broken. Shapeless.
"We liked the idea of coming back to the rotating fan, like a mind constantly spinning. And the duplication of the artist, like a literal interpretation of the duality of the self."
