The Kooks 'Four Leaf Clover' by Sophia + Robert
David Knight - 4th Sept 2018
Sophia + Robert set their stall out as visual stylists with this dreamy confection of English psychedelia for The Kooks.
It's all the more surprising after a brutal beginning, with a schoolgirl under attack in a school shower by unseen bullies. When a second girl appears she could be her tormentor, but turns out to be an ally, or alter ego, as this cold reality slips away.
This has something of the feel of early 70s Nicolas Roeg, as these girls trip away into a hot hazy English summer – intercut with close-ups of cut flowers - and eventually a meeting with the groovy Kooks. The four leaf clover of the title itself becomes a pill, transporting them into this wide-angled world.
