Tunng 'ABOP' by Kijek/Adamski
David Knight - 16th May 2018
Much-loved alt-folk-pop outfit Tunng are back, a new album on the way, and a lovely animated video by the Polish animation team Kijek/Adamski for the first single, ABOP.
As with everything this talented Polish duo does, this is a wonderfully crafted and imaginative piece of work. A richly sensual jungle-like dreamworld counterpoints a woman's restless sleep, the visual style combining elements of Afrocentric graphic, abstract expressionist and other mid-20th centry fine art influences.
This serves a classic Moog-led Tunng song, that begins with a sampled speech from the 1970s pornographic actor Mary Millington, and builds into a magical pop feast with hidden depths lurking under an 808 pigeon beat. Founding members Sam Genders and Mike Lindsay (fresh from his LUMP side project with Laura Marling) are back in the band, with the rest of the Tunng line-up, for the first time since 2007’s Good Arrows.
The new album, Songs You Make At Night, is released on Full Time Hobby on 24th August.
