Blood Orange 'Augustine' by Devonte Hynes
Luke Bather - 5th July 2016
Devonte Hynes' musical vision as Blood Orange is accompanied by a self-directed, free-flowing video for Augustine, shot in New York City.
We see Hynes and his friends dance on rooftops, congregate on stairs, and go for jerk chicken (one of his friends being Julian Casablancas of The Strokes). All of this is intercut with footage of Hynes alone in an apartment, composing and performing with various instruments as well as singing in front of a hand-painted flag of Sierra Leone - a reference to both his father's birthplace and the name of his latest album Freetown Sound (Freetown being Sierra Leone's capital city).
The low-contrast, analogue film look and muted colour palettes in this video work incredibly well with the locations, making the whole thing feel like a very stream-of-conscious visual. Not so much a story here, but a series of visual fragments that help tell the wider story of Devonte Hynes and his music.
