Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott’ latest video reflects the Northern Soul-inspired rhythms and beats from their new album Wisdom, Laughter & Lines, with a nostalgic story of hard work and dancehall pleasure.

Jacqui takes on the role of a ladies hairdresser, preparing her clientele for their big nights out. Meanwhile, Paul is the captain of a fishing trawler out at sea, suitably attired in yellow fisherman’s oilskins and hauling nets onboard. The final sequence takes place at an all-nighter soul club complete with queues of scooter boys and modettes – of all ages. But will Paul make it back in time for the dance? 

It's the second video produced for the former Beautiful South pair by Rough Shots Project, a homeless filmmakers initiative created by director Andy Hylton. “Rough Shots Project offers training in film production to young vulnerable people, and we are able to give paid work to inexperienced people who are often living with problem of homelessness and other difficult issues," explains Andy. "It’s important that instead of taking a production mark-up, that the money is put back into the community.

"As filmmakers and producers we have a social responsibility, not just go to a location, take a scalp and then leave. Since we needed to shoot on a trawler, it felt right to make a donation to the Fishermen and Firemen Charity Fund, which provides much needed help for the elderly and infirm during the winter months.”
