New Build 'Pour It On' by Richard Heslop
David Knight - 19th Jan 2015
New Build - Al Doyle (Hot Chip/LCD Soundsystem), Felix Martin (Hot Chip), and Tom Hopkins - approached Richard Heslop to create a video for the title track of their current album Pour It On. The cult filmmaker (who worked with Derek Jarman in the 1980s, before becoming a director of videos for Happy Mondays, New Order, The Shamen, Suede and many more) added the track to footage of artist Rachel Gomme that he'd shot a few years previously.
In this open-air installation piece, Gomme walks along a beach, adding pebbles into her many-pocketed gown. Integrated with the track, the slow-paced piece demands attention and slowly builds an emotional response, as the artist's actions represent the human capacity for resistance.
Meanwhile the setting goes from mundane British seaside to something more lyrical and ultimately surreal. A strange, but strangely moving experience.
