Josh Record 'Wide Awake' by Joe Connor
Jimmy Brown - 18th June 2014
Powered by sterling work from sculptor Bobby Tonge and projectionists Nick Platt and Jim Dawson, Joe Connor serves up a visual treat for Josh Record's Wide Awake.
Watch as Josh's numerous heads melt in sweltering studio conditions as the track escalates to really rather brilliant effect...
JOE CONNOR
"As soon as I heard this track I new I had to make the video for it - it just seemed to resonate so much and Josh's voice is so incredible that I think I wrote 3 treatments in a few hours for this track, it really got my mind working. Of the 3 treatments, this was my favourite concept - a bunch of melty Josh heads in a room.
"I’m so happy Josh and the guys at Virgin took a chance on what sounds like a ridiculous concept as I think we’ve made a really cool video - and the best thing about is it that everything seen in the video was done in camera with no digital trickery, nothing is faked.
"I enlisted the help of sculptor extraordinaire Bobby Tongue who created multiple sculptures of Josh’s head made from wax. Poor Josh had to sit for an hour with his head in a cast while we all took ridiculous photos with him (see here). We filmed Josh square on against black and then projection mapped Josh’s face onto the wax sculptures on location in Manchester giving this eerie effect of all these wax heads coming to life in a ghostly manner, which for me really translates the melancholy in the song, it’s a great effect.
"We then heated up the room to achieve the melt on camera, the effect is really beautiful, a testament to creativity and good old fashioned arts and crafts. Everyone that worked on it was amazing, from Annika’s beautiful cinematography, Nick Crossley’s great producing to get me what I needed to make the video to Nick Platt and the guys at Drop City for their amazing projection mapping work. It’s a real team effort and the result is one of my favourite pieces of work".
