Rae Morris 'Do You Even Know' by Nadia
After Nadia Marquard Otzen's video for Rae Morris's Skin, where the young singer-songwriter is transformed into a classical sculpture, the pair are back together for the video for Do You Even Know.
Rae is statuesque in this too, in a very different way. Within her stylish home, Rae strikes still-life poses that suggest action. But their significance only becomes clear towards the end, when the increasingly kinetic edit brings them all together.
A very accomplished video, and Nadia and Rae is shaping up to be one the artist-director collaborations of the year.
NADIA MARQUARD OZTEN: "We're bombarded with photographs all the time, more than ever; defining and redefining ourselves through a constant flow of photographic representations. But do we ever really know the person? In the video we play with Rae being held in frozen moments. A hard flash isolating her within a space. A sense of claustrophobia. As the video progresses we start realising that her various static poses link together and when edited in a sequence starts animating. She spirals out of control. And then breaks free from the restrictive poses, which held her before. Regained confidence.
"It was a very technical shoot. Each pose carefully planned from drawings I had done based on Alice in Wonderland tumbling down the Rabbit Hole. But as we couldn't shoot the poses chronologically we had to gradually build the puzzle of 30 or so different shapes. I got to play with my doll that day."
