For this beautiful and unique promo to The Beatles' rendition of Buddy Holly's Words Of Love - taken from the album On Air - Live at the BBC Vol. 2 - Passion Pictures' creative director Pete Candeland and directors Lee Gingold and Giles Dill collaborated and researched stories and footage from 1963 - the year The Beatles progressed from being the opening act on tour to very much the main event.

The resulting video captures that heady period with a combination of archive news footage, material shot by director Richard Lester for the Fab Four's first movie A Hard Day's Night, and original frames of animation that create a narrative, part based in the fact of the band travelling Britain during the freezing winter of 1963, with an added whimsical graphic element. The witty pencil-rendered drawings, partly added to the old footage, suit the song and the period, but also feel fresh as a daisy. It looks like Lennon may have added doodles to the film himself.  

The directing team found that the archival footage had a naturally beautiful quality about it; grainy and ridden with imperfections, so a pencil-rendered finish was the best style for the designs. “After listening to the album, the song that really stood out for us was the cover of Buddy Holly’s Words of Love," says Belinda Blacklock, executive producer at Passion NYC. "We felt that this song really helped us tell the story of the rise of The Beatles, and we tried to use that contagious energy from the album for our music video." 

And Pete Candeland adds, "Having worked with The Beatles in the past, it was nice to come together again with everyone at Apple Corps to create and bring to life this visionary year.”
