Races 'Lies' by Edward Chase Masterson
David Knight - 22nd June 2012
Edward Chase Masterson's excellent video for Races' fine song Lies is an American suburban nightmare, which he's subtitled "Keep Your Hood Up & Your Head Down".
Races' lead singer Wade Ryff is running away from something or someone, having been in a fight. Then it flashes back to the first time he enters this apparently peaceful neighbourhood - and the depth of his unpopularity with the local population starts to become apparent. Ryff lipsyncs throughout, so it's not just a gripping action-packed short film with a cool soundtrack.
"The shooting of this video was particularly interesting because there was this sense that we were working in the belly of the beast, so to speak," says Edward "The modern suburban neighborhood and life that feeds off paranoia. The irony of such an idealistic and peaceful neighborhood being inhabited by residents who seemed so scared to live there was something that really spoke to some of the most recent social issues that abstractly inspired this video. Keep your hood up and your head down America."
Edward also directed the previous Races video, for Big Broom, which is pretty damn good too...
