Pengilly's 'Toby's Hill' by Brown Bread Films
David Knight - 6th Sept 2011
This is a highly impressive, gripping video for unsigned outfit Pengilly's by Leeds-based Brown Bread Films, for the band's lovely Toby's Hill, which combines a skilful exploration of the dynamics of a mini-cult - led by band frontman Ric Hollingbery - stunning locations and photography, and a surprise ending.
"We're fascinated by cults such as Heaven's Gate, West Boro Baptist Church, Raelism and Scientology, and how charismatic, complex individuals can have so much power over people who might not necessarily be stupid or weak, just suggestible," explains Rob Blake from Brown Bread Films, a collective also consisting of Rory Martinez, Thomas Harrison and James-Alexander Adair, who also recently made an impressive video for I Swim With Sharks.
It was, of course, shot in Yorkshire - at the Otley Sailing Club, and on Ilkley Moor. "The band were really open to the way we wished to portray them, Ric particularly, as a spoilt ego-maniac, drunk on power over the group," Rob continues. "They were fantastic to work with and all in all shooting this video was an absolute pleasure."
