Edwyn Collins’ Do It Again by Kieran Evans

David Knight - 20th Dec 2010

Five years ago Edwyn Collins was almost killed by a huge stroke that left him disabled and speechless, but his miraculous recovery reached another milestone this year with the release of a new album, and this excellent video by Kieran Evans helps to seal his elevation to the pantheon of Rock's great survivors.

It's a banging performance vid, with a all-star backing band - featuring Alex Kapranos and Nick McCarthy from Franz Ferdinand and a statesmanlike Paul Cook, previously of the Sex Pistols - and real double-take moment. Somehow it also includes a fresh-faced, Orange Juice-era Edwyn. Kieran, best known for his longform music work, also directed the vid for album title track Losing Sleep, and here he was ably assisted by DoP Neil Thomson, and excellent After Effects work and editing by Andrew Philip. It may have been made on a shoestring, but it looks great. As for spookily convincing 'young Edwyn' - that's actually the great man's son William, who now performs with his dad.
