Matt Abbott, Alan Pownall, I Am Arrows: three videos by Helen Downing
David Knight - 22nd June 2010
Helen Downing - perhaps best known for her ads and TV work with Jamie Oliver - has dived into the world of music videos with no less than three new videos. With her 'A Team' of 2am producer Charlie Forte and DoP Steve Annis, these first forays into music promos - all for Dan Curwin at Mercury - have been shot in highly contrasting locations, but all exhibit a talent for combining performance in a natural setting. And they've been shot in highly contrasting locations.
Firstly Helen has captured Matt Abbott's uplifting tribute to his hometown with a part-documentary piece shot on a boozy (but good-natured) Saturday night in Wakefield.
Helen's next outing is a bit more glamorous: she was brought in to add her sparkle to singer-songwriter Alan Pownall's video for 'Colourful Dayho - shot over two days in the slightly sunnier climes of Cuba. The result is arguably her most accomplished video of the bunch.
To cap off the trilogy, Helen captured a slightly looser indie vibe for the debut video of former Razorlight drummer, Andy Burrow's new band, I Am Arrows. Infectious and tipped to be a great summer tune as festival season approaches, Helen stuck with her "island paradise" theme for the video and took the band off to... The Isle of wight. For a playful bit of fooling around.
