Grovesnor’s Dan by Adam Watson
David Knight - 14th June 2010
Former Hot Chip member Rob Smoughton's soft-rock project Grovesnor has inspired this entertaining slice of comedy-drama mixed with performance video directed by Adam Watson.
Dramatizing the story of singer Rob's love for the girlfriend of Dan - the band's bassist, played by Mathew Baynton (who also starred in Dougal Wilson's opera video Largo Al Factotum and is a regular face on the marvellous Horrible Histories) there are also cameos from some top British comedy talent - including the annoyingly ubiquitous, Jean-Luc Picard-hating James Corden.
This is only Adam Watson's second video - and his first, for Kissy Sell Out's Apple Jelly, won a video competition on Genero.tv late last year. "I really wanted to bring a timeless look to the video but like so many super low budget productions these days we shot on the 5D," says Adam. "To soften the digital look we used some nice lenses and gave the end product a strong softened grade. This pushes the look and feel back a few years and creates that ageless quality. Dan yells out to tell a story, and that's what we did with the help of several strong comedy performances."
As for the song, fans of the godlike genius of Todd Rundgren (and who isn't) will love it.
