KT Tunstall’s Little Favours (AKA The Tunstallator) by Chris Bran
David Knight - 14th May 2008
Chris Bran directed KT Tunstall's video for Saving My Face a while back, projecting her as a more serious artist after a couple of comedy efforts.
And with that job successfully done he now comes up with... The Tunstallator. Well, Chris and KT are now good pals, and she asked him to make a little YouTube having seen his comedy work - Chris explains more below.
So here is The Tunstallator - as presented (and operated) by obsessive fan Mr Fritter...
Chris Bran on making The Tunstallator video
"KT saw some of my comedy work and asked if I could make something specifically for YouTube that had a comic slant to it. After several visits to B&Q and various toy shops I had accumulated enough wood, screws, string and plastic T-rex claws to build The Tunstallator.
"I built it in my studio in West London then recruited my comedy partner Justin Chubb to play the part of obsessive fan Mr. Fritter (BA/BSc). The video stemmed from our other comic creation Jack Selby who ended up (fictionally) stalking KT.
"The luxury of having The Tunstallator in the same room as me as I edited meant that as I came up with new ideas for scenes and devices I could just shoot them and drop them into the edit. I built up the whole thing over a few weeks and used some sneaky animation to create the illusion that there are multiple strings operating different parts of the puppet.
"KT had no idea what I was up to and only saw the video when it was completely finished. I think the thing that had the most impact on her was the egg whisk/T-Rex claw combo. Well, it would wouldn't it"
