NEW: Mika's Lollipop by Bonzom
David Knight - 28th Nov 2007
The new Mika vid is the first ever by five young French animators collectively known as Bonzom - and they could hardly have made a better job of expanding upon the psychedelic world of Mika's album artwork and website.
For a start that was a eminently sensible move because the artwork - strongly influenced, of course, by uplifting Beatles-style psychedelia - is strongly suited to Mika's distinctive brand of exuberance. Perhaps that's not so surprising as it was created by his sister Jasmine, with graphic design help from Airside.
Various characters and objects from the artwork and website have successfully made the leap to the video - in particular the little girl who becomes a Little Red Riding Hood pursued by a pack of stylish black wolves, through a landscape of exploding wordage.
Bonzom are specialists in 2D animation - from traditional drawn animation to Flash. They are Jack, Kalkair, Pozla, Waterlili and Moke - all recent graduates of three animation schools in France: Les Gobelins, La Poudriere and L'ESAAT. They've worked together as animators on series and feature projects, including the Oscar-nominated Persepolis, and earlier this year, Passion Paris (Passion Pictures' Paris based studio) gave them the chance to come together Bonzom. On the strength of this they've got a great future.
