Sean Pecknold's latest creative tour de force for his brother Robin's band Fleet Foxes is a fully animated video for Featherweight that tells the story of a bird on a final extraordinary adventure.The video has been created in a style that echoes Pecknold's video for the band's <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/news/2011/11/22/fleet-foxes-shrine-argument-sean-pecknold/10926" target="_blank">The Shrine/An Argument</a>&nbsp;- one of the real&nbsp;masterpieces among his many wonderful videos for Fleet Foxes.&nbsp;From the art and design by Sean Lewis, Pecknold has created flat-artwork puppets that are stop-frame animated through gorgeous hand-painted scenes.

A new song from Fleet Foxes has given Sean Peckold&nbsp;and his partner Adi Goodrich the opportunity to complete a dance trilogy, and reflect upon the emotional impact of the pandemic through choreography.&nbsp;Featuring Jade-Lorna Sullivan (who also featured in the video for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2017/05/29/fleet-foxes-fools-errand-sean-pecknold/47915" target="_blank">Fool's Errand</a>)&nbsp;and Jean Charles (the lead in the video for song suite <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2018/09/10/fleet-foxes-i-am-all-i-needarroyo-secothumbprint-scar-sean-pecknold/54934" target="_blank">I Am All That I Need/Arroyo Seco/Thumbprint Scar</a>), with choreography by&nbsp;Steven Reker, this is a dance piece for Can I Believe In You, that takes place in a studio environment of near-abstract theatrical set-ups, designed by Goodrich, that encapsulate the spirit of Fleet Foxes.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]This is the tenth video directed by Sean Pecknold for his brother Robin's band - a&nbsp;marvellous addition to&nbsp;a collaboration that began with the videos for the first Fleet Foxes album in 2008, including White Winter Hymnal, and has become a major body of work.

Fleet Foxes - Can I Believe You

Sean Pecknold&#39;s&nbsp;ninth video for Fleet Foxes maintains the aura and mystique that has surrounded more or less all his work his brother Robin&#39;s band.This is a surreal narrative, involving a man&#39;s relationship with a large floating red cube, that repeatedly sends him on a journey&nbsp;into the desert, when he touches it. Created for the suite of songs&nbsp;I Am All That I Need/Arroyo Seco/Thumbprint Scar from Fleet Foxes&#39; 2016 album Crack-Up, it&#39;s a prequel (or possibly sequel) to last year&#39;s video for Fool&#39;s Errand, which also explored a natural landscape through human interaction and choreography. The result is equally mesmerizing.&nbsp;As always with Pecknold&#39;s work, the innovations in how the video was created,&nbsp;on a very challenging budget, have played a big part in contributing to that aura and mystique.&nbsp;In this case, he and his partner Adi Goodrich created all the props themselves, including the red cube, in their own studio, and he prepped and acted out every moment of the video before he shot an inch of footage&nbsp;- and this was shot on Kodak 35mm film.&nbsp;&nbsp;The video was co-produced by WeTransfer and there is a long interview with Sean Peckinold about his work with Fleet Foxes on the&nbsp;brand website <a href="https://wepresent.wetransfer.com/story/fleet-foxes-arroyo-seco/" target="_blank">WePresent</a>, featuring contributions from brother Robin and sister Aja (she manages Fleet Foxes). Sean Pecknold has collaborated with production designer Adi Goodrich and choreographer Steven Reker on the Fleet Foxes video for Fool&#39;s Errand - the band&#39;s first since 2011 &ndash; and it&#39;s&nbsp;an appropriately beautiful&nbsp;piece to join the impressive body of work&nbsp;he has previously created for his brother Robin&#39;s band.Shot in the spectacular setting of Montana di Oro state park&nbsp;in the Californian coast, with the charismatic Lorna-May Sullivan as the video&#39;s dark central figure, and a squad of other dancers divided into colour coded smaller groups, this is an absorbing visual exercise in enhancing the beauty&nbsp;of the natural world through choreography, wardrobe&nbsp;and art direction.As he explains below, it gave Pecknold the opportunity to shoot 35mm film for the first time, with his regular DoP collaborator&nbsp;Zia Mohajerjasbi. Sean Pecknold gives us all a Gold Feeling in this dance fantasy film for Fred Nicolas, aka Golden Suits.The clip sees a young boy try to salvage the remains of a Middle School dance, and win over his dream girl, albeit a little too late. That doesn&#39;t seem to stop him having a good time - with lighthearted, charming choreography melding seamlessly with costume and production design to bring the nostalgic elements of the video to the fore.

Sean Pecknold is a director&nbsp;who makes distinctive work&nbsp;whether he&#39;s working in two-dimensional&nbsp;graphics or live action, involving real people and props. Here he combines both.His&nbsp;delightful&nbsp;visualisation of Nicolas Godin&#39;s Orca closely follows the experimental nature of the music, reflecting how the Air man&#39;s solo project has been influenced by at least two musical movements of the past. Sean Pecknold's video for his Portland-based friends Pure Bathing Culture and their track Ivory Coast is a bucolic romance, featuring bandmembers Sarah Versprille and Dan Hindman - and Sarah's little blue friend. So having made the delightful video for Here We Go Magic earlier this year, it's Sean's second drily humourous piece featuring a strange menage a trois in a matter of months... 
"I became friends with Dan and Sarah from PBC as soon as I moved to Portland," says Sean. "I love the music they are making, and then they asked me to make a video. I said...sure let's do it. I really wanted to shoot something in Oregon, and specifically in the strange area south of Astoria on the coast, a place called Sunset Beach. 
"I wanted to make more of a performance video something I haven't done much of in the past. We went back and forth on the concept then spent a weekend out there, and made the video. I made the little blue creature just before leaving on our way out there. We luckily found an amazing trailer park with stylized interiors, that worked well for the story and just seemed to fit the world. They are a great band, and I expect greatness from their coming LP."

Sean's clip for Chains, Chains, Chains is mysterious and subtly beautiful, set in a cave-world apparently submerged, but where birds fly around disturbing smoke. It was created with miniature models and sculptures, stop motion and in-camera effects, with the band captured enigmatically in silhouette. And there was indeed fire and water.
"We built the miniature set, lit it on fire and flooded it in a giant fish tank," Sean explains. "Elvis and the band were shot in New York, and then projected into the mouth of the lion statue with a tiny projector. Mike [Ragen] shot the miniatures with the Red camera, and stop-motion was done using a dSLR. It took about 4 weeks to complete the video."

Fleet Foxes are marvellous. They also have a very talented filmmaker to call upon close by for their visual expression: Sean Pecknold - brother of lead vocalist Robin Pecknold.
Sean (aka Grandchildren) is a designer and prolific filmmaker usually specialising in animation - and he created the lovely time-on-a-wheel claymation video for White Winter Hymnal a few months ago.
His new one for Fleet Foxes is live action, but a complete charmer too: the band perform the video to an attentive audience of goats. Yup, goats (courtesy of local outfit Rent-A-Ruminant).
The video on shot on Vashon Island, in Puget Sound, just south of Seattle. "We shot the video in a small rec hall on the island," Sean explains. "The usual site of the Vashon Island Extreme Ping Pong League, I kid you not. We had about eight hours to figure out how we were going to get human and animal to co-exist, and shoot it and then clean up.
"The goats were from the island and run a little landscaping business when not doing video shoots. They eat blackberry bushes for money, it's a pretty good gig for them. They were very friendly with everyone and Tammy their herder was so patient and nice. It was fun."
