Producer Rosie Brear makes a notable directing debut for Irish singer-songwriter Orla Gartland, dramatizing the artist's party-fatigue from the perspective of her reflection in the mirror.The song Pretending is about exactly that - the exhausting business of putting on a front, not being entirely yourself, when conversing with strangers. Brear focusses on the moment when Gartland is taking time out at a fancy dress party in the bathroom, looking at herself in the mirror - which becomes the portal of all the action, as other partygoers continually invade the space.It's an entertaining and compelling device to deliver the narrative arc, and the message of the song. Brear, producer of videos for Declan McKenna, Sports Team, Joesef, and others&nbsp;this year - and also this one -&nbsp;shows she is amply capable of doing the directing thing too.

Molly Burdett’s second collaboration with Glaswegian soul singer Joesef celebrates the freedom and energy of youth, and the infectious power of dancing like no one is watching.The video focusses upon a working class community, life in a social club, and a sense of wellbeing and confidence of a young boy within that setting, to go off to dance on his own in the indoor bowling area. And that inspires Joesef and his mates to follow his lead, and chance their arm at some impromptu dancing.Burdett dovetails the documentary look with a bit of heartstring-tugging entertainment - shot on 35mm film by Miles Ridgeway. No wonder she describes the style as "Billy Elliot meets Andrea Arnold."

The Roosens direct a poignant tale exploring the end of a relationship, in the video for The Howl &amp; The Hum's Hostages.&nbsp;Set in present day Antwerp, Belgium,&nbsp;the concept depicts an ex-couple sharing&nbsp;the awkward ritual of meeting to return the other’s possessions, experiencing the bittersweet emotions and memories that the objects inspire.&nbsp;&nbsp;The cinematic visual utilises a voiceover and subtitles to create a filmic quality, toeing the line between short film and music video. Shot during the current lockdown, The Roosens have tackled a host of creative challenges, turning their limitations into building blocks of the narrative.

Polish-German director Aldona Kwiatowski makes a notable music video debut for this track from Elderbrook's debut album. It's a story of a brief encounter, featuring&nbsp;Charly Clive and Tamica Thompson.The video for Numb&nbsp;explores the introspectiveness of feeling alone,&nbsp;and the delight of friendship - which turns out to&nbsp;be fleeting, or at least temporary.Clive's character is distinctly alone,&nbsp;as she prepares for a night out, and then walks through the streets of Shoreditch. But then something happens when she connects with another woman, and develops a non-verbal bond, through dance. It's a charming device to demonstrate the growing&nbsp;chemistry between them, delicately handled by&nbsp;Kwiatowski.&nbsp;And there is room to explore the possible history of the relationship, which has a poignant ending.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;
