Luke Losey continues his excellent run of recent videos for techno legends Orbital with&nbsp;a charming, textural promo for Are You Alive?, featuring Penelope Isles.&nbsp;Following the UKMVA-nominated animated promo for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2022/08/01/orbital-smiley-luke-losey/77631" target="_blank">Smiley</a> and slice-of-life grittiness of the Sleafords Mods collab <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2022/10/27/orbital-ft-sleaford-mods-dirty-rat-luke-losey/78961" target="_blank">Dirty Rat</a>, this one is rather more serene, combining&nbsp;performance with patterned square overlays, creating a simple yet pleasing effect."It's a simple minimal analogue looking piece, a bit of funky dystopian retrofuturism," explains Losey.&nbsp;"Someone remarked it looks like the kind of video they would be watching in a bar in the Star Wars series Andor -&nbsp;which is, of course, a great compliment."A great compliment indeed, and a video well worth the watch.&nbsp;

Luke Losey directs a micro-budget occult pantomime for&nbsp;Orbital, featuring Mediaeval Baebes.The video for Ringa Ringa&nbsp;features a menagerie of&nbsp;woodland creatures doing dance routines, in quite possibly the strangest video you'll see all week.&nbsp;Nightmarishly upbeat, the video plays with a&nbsp;dichotomy of haunting imagery and bold primary colours, creating an otherworldly aesthetic that you won't be able to look away from - even if you might want to.&nbsp;Uniquely macabre and absolutely consuming.&nbsp;

Luke Losey reunites with the Hartnoll brothers to brilliantly evoke the spirit of original rave culture, and its anti-authoritarian roots, in the video for Smiley.Losey has painstakingly created the most imaginative and entertaining form of history lesson - with a few imaginative liberties taken -&nbsp;through an amalgamation of techniques: including hand-crafted sock puppets, high end CGI, background stock footage, live action elements, stills and stop motion animation.It's all for the purpose of telling the story of those illegal raves in the late 1980s, that exploited the opening of that&nbsp;brand new motorway from which the Hartnoll brothers took the name, for their own DJ performances, and created a brave new world of dance culture.[imgtoken data:1]With a soundtrack that includes clips from radio news reports of the era, there is brilliant and affectionate attention to detail here amid the thrills and excitement. And crucially, it also captures that real level of antithesis towards the forces of power - personified in Margaret Thatcher. And she turns up here - a compellingly monstrous Iron Lady, aiming to smash up the party.But in this version of events - which involves unicorns and aliens -&nbsp;there is a happy ending...&nbsp;“There was a moment in the late 1980’s that bridged the gap between free festivals and big raves,” says Luke Losey. “These events had a strong DIY ethos that was a kindred spirit to punk. We would go and put great big metal sculptures in the woods or perhaps an abandoned railway station, hang a few lights and power up a sound system.[imgtoken data:2]"That handmade DIY feel of the time was something we wanted to imbue into the film from the start. But also the sense of unity that existed amongst us, despite Thatcher’s authoritarian desire to sew division, divide and conquer, with her foot soldiers in blue and her red-tops with their morally dubious claim to offer a better version of Britain than the one we could clearly see unraveling before our eyes."Hindsight has given us the opportunity to rectify past misdeeds with the happy ending we didn’t get at the time. No unicorns were hurt in the making of this film.”

Paul Hartnoll, formerly of dance behemoths&nbsp;Orbital, has embarked on a new solo project called 8:58, with a strong conceptual theme, about the tyranny of the clock. Hence&nbsp;the name (in other words, two minutes before 9am, and the start of the working day) and also The Clock, the launch track&nbsp;which features a speech track by actor Cillian Murphy, playing a character called &#39;The Generic Man&#39;.&nbsp;&nbsp;Hartnoll contributed music to Peaky Blinders, the hugely successful TV show starring Murphy.&nbsp;And the musician turned to another long-time collaborator to make the off-the-wall video for&nbsp;The Clock:&nbsp;Luke Losey was Orbital&#39;s lighting designer and live visuals creator in the 90s, before co-directing a brilliant video for The Box with Jez Benstock,&nbsp;starring Tilda Swinton in 1996,&nbsp;and going on to several more excellent&nbsp;videos for Orbital, and other artists.For The Clock, Luke has drawn his inspiration from a classic children&#39;s TV show, with an outcome that will&nbsp;amuse almost everyone&nbsp;of a certain age.&nbsp;It features a faceless City gent (in old-school bowler hat and pinstripes) on his way to work, then distracted by the window of a fancy-dress shop, and welcomed inside by the owner...Shot in locations in central&nbsp;and East London - including the Only Fools and Peacocks fancy-dress shop in Hackney &ndash; it also features&nbsp;Cillian Murphy in a variety of guises - as befits his character.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]

Many moons ago Luke Losey co-directed one of the great videos of the Nineties: <a href="http://lukelosey.com/html/video_1.html">Orbital's The Box</a>.
Luke has also directed idiosyncratic, richly detailed vids for <a href="http://lukelosey.com/html/video_5.html">William Orbit</a>, <a href="http://lukelosey.com/html/video_2.html">Mercury Rev</a> and (again) <a href="http://lukelosey.com/html/video_3.html">Orbital</a>, and now he's back with his first video for ages, for Supergrass pair Gaz Coombes and Danny Goffey's new side project Hot Rats, and their faithful cover of Gang Of Four's Damaged Goods.
Shot at Wiltons music hall in Shadwell, Bill Sykes-lookalike Gaz, and Danny, the heavily-disguised fortune teller, are players in a characteristically old-world Luke Losey universe. And Gaz is looking for answers from that crystal ball...
