Nogari directs a breathtaking promo for Tove Lo's new release - a love story with a difference.&nbsp;Shot in Mexico City, the video for Borderline sees an exhausted crash test dummy come to life and kidnap Tove Lo - who he has become obsessed with, having seen her calendar every day in the crash lab.&nbsp;From then on, the video transitions into an unusual love story, in which Lo falls in love with him and his criminal ways, until an explosive climax on the run from the police, which brings the video full circle.&nbsp;The dusty, gritty aesthetic and retrofuturistic nostalgia in the imagery is perfectly inkeeping with the artist's style at this point in her career. With Nogari's direction to elevate it to this level, it will no doubt have a lot of buzz around it when it comes to award season.&nbsp;

Quentin Deronzier directs an extraordinary promo for The Weeknd, to tie-in with his official track for Avatar: The Way of Water.&nbsp;The cinematic visual was completely shot and post-produced between Thailand and LA, using no footage at all from the James Cameron's record-breaking movie&nbsp;- which makes this even more of an impressive feat.&nbsp;The world of Avatar is brought to life through fascinating&nbsp;cinematography, action-packed vignettes and stunning, effervescent lighting, resulting in&nbsp;environments as otherworldly as those in the film.&nbsp;Completely breathtaking and trippy throughout, it's a beautiful complement to the music.&nbsp;

Khalid and Summer Walker get&nbsp;fast and furious in Daniel Russell's high octane video for Eleven.&nbsp;Packed with vibrant colour and early 00's exuberance, the video explores a drag race across Los Angeles (with cars, not drag queens), where Khalid is pitted against a selection of eclectic characters.Glossy, smooth and oozing with production value, it's a brilliant visual complement to the enigmatic track. A high-energy choreography section at the climax of the video strengthens the 00's throwback, reminiscent of the days where budgets where wild and the ideas were even wilder.&nbsp;

This video encompasses all of the above, with Russell's own flair thrown in.&nbsp;With a trademark beat and catchy refrain, the visual depicts Elliott as an art exhibit, on-display alongside a group of glitching, floating characters. And then, to top it all off, Missy Elliot backflips out of a car bonnet - an image you didn’t know you needed until you've see it.Tempo looks both contemporary and loveably old school, like it could have existed in any era of hip-hop. Dragged into a video within a video, Smith ponders heartache and resentment between a troupe of shirtless dancers and a crash test robot.It’s easy to be wistful about a bygone era of shiny event videos. Enormous studio affairs, dripping in extravagance and stuffed with thrilling, superfluous set-pieces. You want Madonna giving a sermon on a swan gargoyle. Prince in his church bathtub. Bjork yelling from the back of a lorry. Next time you’re feeling nostalgic, spare a thought for Grant Singer - this is what he does. Think instead of <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2017/03/07/lorde-green-light-grant-singer/46601">Lorde stomping on top of an Uber</a>. Of the Weeknd <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2016/09/30/weeknd-ft-daft-punk-starboy-grant-singer/43885">storming through a house with a pink crucifix</a>. Or of Troye Sivan <a href="https://vimeo.com/251203610">strutting through a factory in a big silk cape</a>.This may be the second single from Smith’s upcoming project, but this video feels like a statement of intent. There is a parallel between this dance-driven video and My My My, Grant Singer’s earlier video for Troye Sivan. Sivan <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2019/apr/06/troye-sivan-youtuber-singer-actor-fashion-queer-pride-laura-snapes">spoke glowingly</a> of his experience on My My My, an opportunity for to be visibly and unapologetically queer. Sam Smith already made a foray into the ballroom scene for Promises. But in this video, he is front and centre, fresh from lessons with Parris Goebel, the choreographer behind Justin Beiber’s internet-busting video for Sorry. You’ve never seen a mainstream, male songwriter vogue quite like this.

Tove Lo gets a bit carried away with her breakup advice, travelling all over the world&nbsp;in this “I can’t believe they did that!” video by Vania Heymann and Gal Muggia.When best her pal calls, dumped and heartbroken, Tove Lo excuses herself from a lunch date to give her the talk. We’ve all had to give our friend a variation of this pep&nbsp;talk: he’s the worst, you’re great, you’re better off without him, etc… If you want the message to stick, you have to accept you’re going to be on the phone a long time.And in a phone conversation that seems to last forever, Tove Lo absentmindedly walks into a desert, then to the arctic, then through a hurricane. She rides a freight train, commits a murder, goes to prison, and escapes with the help of her prison-wife. Then she returns with a new passport and identity, in time to pay the bill for her lunch date.The video is spectacular and sweeping, and another tour de force&nbsp;of concept and VFX by the Israeli directors that brought us the joys of <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2016/05/17/coldplay-upup-vania-heymann-and-gal-muggia/41368">Coldplay's Up &amp; Up</a>, and <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2018/04/13/dj-snake-magenta-riddim-vania-heymann-and-gal-muggia/52668" target="_blank">DJ Snake's Magenta Riddim</a>.&nbsp;But it's&nbsp;also a great showcase for Tove Lo's dry, high-concept humour. The Swedish singer&nbsp;plays these increasingly ridiculous scenarios completely straight. And her grounding influence makes this video a warm tribute to friendship, the sentiment being, “I’ll climb a mountain for you, you lovesick idiot.”
