Mark Locke has made videos for Misty's Big Adventure before. His efforts for the songs <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2009/02/16/misty%E2%80%99s-big-adventure%E2%80%99s-between-you-and-me-and-i-can%E2%80%99t-bring-the-time-back-by-mark-locke/" target="_blank">Between You And Me and I Can't Bring The Time Back</a> back in 2009 were full of character and utterly charming. But now we have a new single called Aggression, and Mark has come up with something far darker to accompany the Birmingham band's gloomy assessment of English life. It's a lurid nighttime landscape of drunkenness, sex, violence and fast food, a scattershot comic horror, like a modern Hogarthian look at the underbelly of middle England - with a nod to both the classic Barney Bubbles-directed video for The Specials' Ghost Town, and Thriller...

"I guess you could've gone a number of ways with a video for Aggression, but I loved the idea of Gareth in a crap Midlands town on a Friday night, trying to get a pizza.
"Misty's are a Midlands band and with Aggression's ska vibe the obvious reference was The Specials' 'Ghost Town'. Especially being as we seem to be living in new Ghost Town times. But I didn't want to get too depressing or political, I was trying to channel the spirit of 'Ghost Town', Robin Askwith movies and 'Thriller'.
"In actual fact it was shot in a number of crap Midlands towns, around eight in all, and the shoot felt more like 'Apocalypse Now'. We had the most rain on record, one of our actors had a stroke and the budget just spiralled, from £500 to £850.

"The most difficult part was the chip shop. We've no connections in the chip shop world and the one chippy who said yes would only let us film when they were open. We picked a quiet night but it wasn't quiet at all, and definitely not an ideal situation to film a girl fight. Well, unless you want to film an actual girl fight. Instead of being enamoured by the Hollywood glamour of it all, customers were tripping over our track and saying, 'What the fuck is going on I'm trying to get pie and chips for my children.'..."

A stupendous video for US rock outfit Anberlin&#39;s Unstable by Jodeb - that&#39;s Quebecois animation wizard Jonathan Desbiens - that combines breathtaking location filming and incredible FX work to tell an epic fantasy tale story of love and war...In the video a heroic &#39;Adam and Eve&#39; couple race through a huge desert, that from the start appears to be on the verge of self-destruction, and where huge metallic craft loom on the horizon. Ultimately only one of them can survive...Jodeb has shown himself to be supremely adept at this kind of thing - his video for <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2012/08/17/porter-robinson-language-by-jodeb/" target="_blank">Porter Robinson&#39;s Language</a> combines beautiful New Zealand scenery with magical CG creations to generate a highly cinematic fantasy storyline. But he has out-done himself here.The live action part was filmed in Moab, in the desert of Utah, in extreme heat, and the subsequent FX work, with 3D design, modeling and animation by Paul Laberge as well as Jodeb, is outstanding.&quot;This film was really a very personal, passion project for me throughout the entire process,&quot; says Jonathan, aka Jodeb. &quot;Anberlin contacted me to make a video from their last record, and they wanted to do something very different from what they&#39;ve done before. I discussed a lot with Nate, the drummer, and we both were very excited about making an abstract narrative piece where love and war would blend together seamlessly.&quot;I suggested the idea of shooting in the Utah desert, as I felt from the start that the look of it worked well with the Anberlin aesthetic that I&#39;ve grown up with (I&#39;ve been a big fan of the band since high school). The final film is my personal interpretation of what love is and I always wanted the film to feel like a painting in motion; where emotions are inspired from the colors and the vastness of the environments. I&#39;ve always painted in my spare time (and have studied fine arts) and my video work is heavily influenced by it. So that&#39;s the conceptual part...&quot;Now, the production of this video was crazy. Our producer put together a very small team of extremely dedicated and courageous individuals that were down to drive 10 hours from LA to Moab, Utah (each way!!). We all very quickly became close friends and shot two days in sweltering 40 degree celsius heat. Our crew were warriors, having to deal with not only the heat, but the incredibly dangerous terrain of the Moab.We were lucky enough that our key grip grew up in Moab so he knew all the perfect spots for us to shoot. We were also lucky enough to find a real-life couple to play &quot;Adam &amp; Eve&quot;, which really helped sell the emotion. They were very cool and even brought their young child along for the trip. My VFX/animation guy, who&#39;s a really good friend, also decided to join us, so that he would have a better feel for the environments that the story was taking place in. It was a very special shoot. Especially from my point of view since I live in Quebec, where we&#39;re used to freezing cold winters.&quot;Post-production was very experimental. Paul and I tried stuff that we&#39;ve never done before and we had an incredible amount of unexpected challenges to overcome. Thankfully both the band and label were extremely patient and in the end, that is what really allowed us to bring the visuals to an entirely new level. It&#39;s very rare to be given such freedom and flexibility from clients and crew so for that, we are extremely grateful and we hope that it was worth the wait! I&#39;d really like to thank everybody on the team, they were all unbelievable.&quot;

Flat-e are long term Warp collaborators who specialize in designing some of the most creative projection mapping to date, and have been working with Jamie Lidell on a number of projects, including the artwork for the new album, and that has led to this video for first single You Naked. 

NM: How did you come up with the idea, and how much involvement did Jamie have in the concept Flat-E: Jamie was extremely open to our ideas early on in this project. As we were creating the whole visual identity for the album, promo and forthcoming live tour we built the aesthetic from the ground up. We made sure that Jamie had plenty of input with our ideas because our whole concept was based around him controlling his environment, we wanted him to feel fully connected to the world we created.
Were you tasked to create something that could also be used as live visuals Yes, part of the original brief (which was to some extent self-imposed) was to create something which could be used for not only his live show but create imagery his album art work too. 
The jacket effect is amazing! How did you do that 
We worked with costume designer Francesca Dvorak to create a rain mac which would really pick up our projections. She chose a reflective synthetic fabric for this purpose but we were unaware of exactly how reflective it was. There was this amazing moment when we turned the lights on set and the jacket literally glowed, everyone on set started crowding around the monitors see. It was a pretty special moment!

Presumably most of the effects in the video were achieved in camera Are there any exceptions Obviously the footage is edited but all the animation was created in real time and the lighting effects are all in camera. It was important to be strict about this as we wanted to highlight that all this can be done live as a way of selling the live show. Can you tell us how you projected those visuals around Jamie without projecting them onto him 
Often the projections do go onto him but we worked very carefully with our gaffer and DOP to use lighting to cancel this out. There is one shot of Jamie from above where we physically masked him out by obstructing the projector beam. Are you happy with how it turned out Yes, with highly technical shoots like this, involving playback, lighting and multiple projections, there can be a tendency for things to get a bit a stale. In this case I think we created a system which was flexible enough for us to make the most of Jamie's performance.

John Hardwick makes a rare and very welcome return to music videos with this compelling drama for Jake Bugg&#39;s Seen It All, featuring talented British actor Michael Socha as a young man in a whole heap of trouble.Shot in various locations around Glasgow by legendary DoP Danny Cohen, it&#39;s another slice of contemporary British life for the teenage troubadour, and like Jamie Thraves&#39; excellent vid for <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2012/10/02/jake-bugg-two-fingers-directors-cut-by-jamie-thraves/" target="_blank">Two Fingers</a>, it&#39;s directed with aplomb by a master of the narrative music vid.And this is in the vein of some of John&#39;s great Nineties vids for Blur, Travis and the like. Clocking in at only three minutes- in which Jake makes a fleeting appearance as the Socha character&#39;s table tennis opponent - it&#39;s a masterful exercise in concise storytelling - edited by John&#39;s regular collaborator Owen Oppenheimer - which ultimately provides a poignant twist...And it arrives shortly before the release of John Hardwick&#39;s new movie, the British comedy <a href="http://svengalimovie.com/" target="_blank">Svengali</a>, starring Martin Freeman and Vicky McClure (who plays Jake&#39;s mum in the Two Fingers video)...

This is something of a departure for Jon and Grant, who are best known for their post FX and CG work - their day jobs are as senior 3D and 2D artists from Glassworks and MPC respectively. The I Owe You This video was the first time they worked with actors, and it all has a lovely retro family film feel - alongside some impressive CGI towards the end.

Sinead O'Connor is back with a new album ready to drop next month. In the meantime, she's released her new video for '4th and Vine' as a taster of what's to come. Directed by Kathryn Ferguson, it's an artfully done black and white promo focusing on Irish wedding customs, filmed just outside Dublin. It's also the first music video to feature Sinead herself in over ten years, as she busks in the pub at the wedding reception!
"As it was a wedding song and reminded me of the traditional wedding songs I decided to look back at the now mostly defunct wedding rituals of mid century rural ireland," Kathryn explains. "Rituals like breaking the bread over the bride's head and the appearance of the anonymous strawboys used to feature heavily at most country weddings..."

Directed by Wim Reygaert, Dave is a tribute to David Bowie's career, in which we follow an uncanny Bowie lookalike called Dave (played by model Hannelore Knuts) through a fever dream about Bowie's life and career. And it's fantastic: to a soundtrack of Bowie songs, we follow Dave as he travels through time to track down and exterminate all other versions of himself. It could hardly be more surreal if Nic Roeg himself had directed it...
The trailer is below to the full one-hour film which will have a special screening at the Curzon cinema in Mayfair next Tuesday, November 13th at 6.20pm. The screening will be followed by Q&amp;A with David &amp; Stephen Dewaele, and Wim Reygaert, hosted by George Lamb. 
Dave follows Wim Reygaert's brilliant first film for the Radio Soulwax project, <a href="" target="_blank">Into The Vortex</a> - a journey through one of the last album sleeve factories, in which album cover after album cover comes to life, all in life size version. A Caviar Belgium production, Wim is now represented by Forever Pictures in the UK. 
It marks penultimate stage in a huge, very successful project. "The Ballad of George Collins is a gift of a song, full of story and pathos, made yet more vivid in Sam Lee's interpretation mixed by the legendary John Wood (of Nick Drake fame)," says Andrew. "I was given a free hand by Sam, bringing together a choreographer friend of his, Andrew Graham, and my own theatrical, arguably meta-theatrical, tastes to the story. 
"Working with a tiny budget I focused the vision on three core elements, plastic, light and earth. The song's themes revolve around sex, death and venereal disease (staples of a certain brand of folk music) and while wanting to resist an overly illustrative approach I was keen to tell a story, set within a kind of waking dream, an unconscious playing-out of a young man's fear of the consequences of knowledge (the apple core beside the armchair, the morning after the night before). 
"Drawn through layers of plastic, like veils of the subconscious, he moves from life to death via the whooping water nymph and the maiden of death, each framed by the red lips of temptation. Sam Lee is seen firmly as the impassive observer, the enigmatic story-teller only occasionally touched by the anguish of George Collins. In the vein of Sigur Ros's music, the 10 minute film - in which the voice of the snail is provided by iconic British folk singer Shirley Collins - is peaceful and evocative. But it also has a chilling, quite stomach-churning flipside too - the stop-motion decomposition of the now-dead fox. And it's definitely not faked. 
It's a notable return to music video for Nick Abrahams. Over a decade ago, he was half of iconoclastic directing duo Trash 2000, making videos for the likes of Huggy Bear, Cornershop and Stereolab. He's also worked with Sigur Ros on several occasions, but more recently he has been working with artist and filmmaker Jeremy Deller on two acclaimed documentaries: The Posters Came From The Walls (about Depeche Mode fans) and this year's superb doc, The Bruce Lacey Experience.
Here's what Nick has to say about making his video for Ekki Múkk for the Valtari Mystery Film Experiment: 
"Sigur Ros's management gave me a completely open brief - which was quite brave of them! I've been working on a feature script for a little while, and it struck me that some of the imagery and themes I am working with would complement the Sigur Ros track perfectly, so that was the direction I went in. Their music is so epic and intimate at the same time, and i wanted to reflect this in a story which in some terms is very small, and also huge. 
"I had an idea that the British countryside could be the most alien landscape, more amazing than any special effects, and wanted to capture that feeling of amazement you get when watching a great wildlife documentary, whilst also telling a small fable. This involved working with two units, one helmed by DOP Ole Birkeland (whose work on the films 'The Arbor' and 'Helen' I am a huge fan of) to film the human elements of the story, and the other by wildlife cameraman Martin Dohrn of Ammonite Films to capture the macro world of the snail. We shot it over two days in a field in Amersham found for us by Becky Bazzard at Missenden Valley Locations, and Amazing Animals came up trumps by bringing along Tod, a most patient fox, who literally fell asleep in Aidan's arms while we were filming. 
"The decaying fox sequence was there in the script from the start. First of all we had to source a dead fox - which entailed some rather odd posts by me on Facebook etc requesting anyone seeing dead foxes to contact me. Finally one was found in a field, and I picked it up and drove it down to Bristol where it was shot decomposing on 3 cameras by Martin over a period of about a month in a carefully controlled environment. Later in post, the kind people at Rain in Soho removed a whole heap of flies to make it more of a beautiful sequence - and we added the camera moves in the edit to give it a more poetic feel. 
"The casting was mainly down to synchronicity. I had met Aidan Gillen at a Sigur Ros concert a few years before, through photographer Eva Vermandel, and was keen to work with him. I also saw his work in 'Treacle Jr' recently, which demonstrated just how versatile he is. And I made contact with folk icon Shirley Collins to play the snail. For me her voice sums up for me another England, a forgotten Albion - this might sound pretentious, but i dare you to listen to her recordings from the 60s and not agree with me! 
"I confess I'm quite pleased and proud of the result. Now I'm back to work on the feature script, as I feel it's time to make that happen." With its 5.1 sound mix Ekki Mukk will now be screened ay Art Basel Miami, the London Film Festival and several other art institutions and festivals.

Channelling some classic horror movies of the early video era - and looking largely like it's coming off good old Betamax - comes Chris Boyle's characteristically inspired and ambitious video for Emperor Yes's Wasps, in which actor Dan Schreiber attempts to mix up some Wasp Power in the recording studio, with entertainingly gruesome results... 
"It's a little lofi tale about the dangers of producers getting too creative in the studio and was made as a kind of sing-a-long bootlegged betamax homage to my favourite horror films of the 80's and 90's including Alien, Troll 2, The Fly and My Girl." 
Yeah, that last one is particularly revolting... And Chris mixes live action with lovely animated chapter headings - created by himself and Sam Ballard. "I persuaded the lovely comedian Dan Schreiber to come and feature as the power-crazed producer and it was made it for the Emperor Yes &amp; Friends exhibition at Top Office Machines which featured work by a wide range of visual artists inspired by the two tracks off the bands release. The single is out now on cassette (no less) via Tape Club Records."

In the first of two promos for the UK singer, Paul Caslin delivers this provocative, intense and hard-hitting promo for Plan B's Deepest Shame - from the new album Ill Manors - telling the story of abused kid Michelle with sensitivity and drama.
Performances by Ben Drew aka Plan B and Anouska Mond are intercut with clips from the Ill Manors movie - directed by Drew - tracing Michelle's life from sweet, beautiful girl to tragic adult. 
"Having worked with Ben Drew on various projects over the last two years, the promo for Deepest Shame was a chance to take this to the next level," says Paul. "The shoot took place over two days. Day one was spent in Battersea Power Station which offered up some incredible locations and day two was spent at an underwater tank shooting the final scene from the promo. 
"The edit process involved a lot of late night sessions spent throwing different creative ideas into the mix as it was really important that we found the balance of performance and Michelle's story. I'm really happy with the end result and think it tells her story powerfully."
