Joseph Giffard Tutt

Joseph Giffard Tutt directs a surreal promo for his music ensemble The White Russian.&nbsp;Inspiration for the idea originated from the paintings of Belgian surrealist artist René Magritte, best known for his witty, thought-provoking images.&nbsp;The playful visuals blend everyday objects with protruding faces, whilst interacting with various elements of the landscape, like strumming pylon cables and disembodied hands beating a drum.Each object in the video exerts its own right to consciousness, but also remains limited by the rootedness of its particular state or transience of its existence.Joseph explains: "I kept seeing faces in objects, and once the idea hit me, it could not be ignored.” So he set out on his independently-made labour of love, shooting the footage for the Cancer Knee visual with a&nbsp;skeleton crew, then doing all the visual effects and editing work himself.&nbsp;The result is a singular vision, a love letter to the era of music videos when visionaries like Michel Gondry loomed large - and made in complete disregard of any industry expectations.

Joseph Giffard Tutt&rsquo;s charming and atmospheric promo for Goldheart Assembly&rsquo;s ballad Billy In The Lowground, gives the chance for a bunch of cool kids to channel their inner rock star, and what little stars they are.
&ldquo;The band came to me with the idea of using kids in the video. I thought this was an inspired choice, but I wanted to match the dark undertones of the song with this in some way&rdquo; explains Joseph. &ldquo;To me, the lyrics spoke about the kind of angst that any creative comes up against when trying to get recognition for their work in a world that&rsquo;s a bit cynical and over-crowded.
&ldquo;I wanted to take this theme back to the world of the kids; what originally drove them to want to become musicians or &ldquo;rock stars&rdquo;. The meeting of a version of the bands past and present selves would add another dimension to the lyrics and possibly a strange kind of clarity.
&ldquo;The whole park scene is about finding fans, by almost bullying them into submission. Bands have to be so persistent, and it&rsquo;s become the artists responsibility to keep all this up with social media and whatnot &ndash; whereas maybe in the past the artist would just do the job of making the material.
&ldquo;The edit that went out originally was devoid of any shots of the real band. In this director&rsquo;s cut the band feature at the end, to give that jarring reminder of who the song is by and what these kids have become.
&ldquo;Many thanks to all the kids in the film. They were all much easier to work with than adults!&rdquo;

New director Joseph Giffard Tutt delivers a time-lapse Thames-side performance of London orchestral indie band Sea Stacks &ndash; then follows frontman Davy Berryman as he makes his way through central London &ndash; in his promo for The High Tide.
Tutt adds some inspired and effective animation to the time-lapse footage midway through the promo, as the soundtrack gains momentum.
&ldquo;The idea sprang from the sense of time passing in the song&rdquo; explains Joseph. &ldquo;I could hear what sounded like a ticking clock and it got me thinking about time-lapse with a the band at the centre of it. We filmed everyone playing the song 6 times slower than usual and took it to the southbank to busk.
&ldquo;The animation idea seemed quite random at first, but I wanted to express something in the metaphor of the song. It&rsquo;s about depression. It&rsquo;s an uplifting song, but this was at the heart of it. I thought that having the singer swept up by a wave and submerged in blackness suddenly, whilst out there in the real world, would match the feeling of the song.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;d planned to get a DOP and animator involved but it turned out in the end I had to do most of the legwork myself, which certainly taught me a lot. The assistant director Rebecca Helen Page helped a lot with general decision making and also choreographing the last sequence, which we had to practice pretty hard on. It&rsquo;s supposed to be playful and capture the light touch that Davy and the band has with the music&rdquo;.
