With nearly 3 million hits on Youtube and one of the most anticipated releases of 2011, Adele&#39;s opening gambit for the forthcoming 21 album campaign, is the earthy Brit-soul of Rolling In The Deep accompanied by an excellent promo by Sam Brown.With all departments turning in great work, this classy well-shot promo has some nice touches throughout, including some Jurassic Park-style water ripples masking the kick drum and a nice bit of slow-mo on the dancer in the white powder, all building in intensity to suit the escalating soundtrack.

Jay-Z's fifth single from The Blueprint 3 brings Sam Brown back to promos - he's now usually occupied making ads - to make a compelling, bold and beautiful take on the hip-hop video.Packed with stunning imagery, and intriguing characters, it's essentially a series of seemingly disconnected portraits and setpieces. And the video has been the subject of a huge amount of web conjecture, based around its apparently references to Freemasonry and the Illuminati.If anything this is Sam making a point of putting some of the dyed-in-the-wool conventions of the hip-hop video aside, and moving on - his take on the theme of the song.It's his best for a long time - with a brilliant edit by Amanda James.Sam Brown on making the video for Jay-Z's On To The Next One"I was very much into things that capture the music but don't exactly relate to each other. I think that's a more interesting way of working. At this stage, I'm not interested in a conventional narrative or doing a straight performance video."The imagery is quite unusual, and people have read things into it. I didn't realize that there have been all these stupid rumours of Jay-Z being in some occult sect. I had no idea."It was the sound itself that got me into the dark stuff. The song has a harsh repetitive sample, the first time I heard it I thought it was like a song going backwards - like the ones that get interpreted as demonic messages. The song sounds so oppressive and that's what I wanted - something dark, oppressive and brutal."The song is about progress, about not getting stuck doing the same thing, and hip-hop can be oddly conservative, with conventions that are very rarely broken. Jay-Z has been more openminded, looking outside hip-hop for inspiration. So the video is really about being a funeral for clichéd rap imagery."You have to destroy one thing in order to create another. Before you can bring in something new. Did Jay-Z get that Well, he gave me the brief, and I showed him a lot of images, but didn't really get to explain my thinking. He really let me get on with it."We shot at Coyote Studios in LA for two days with two cameras. No big sets or complicated lighting. The 4:3 format is a reaction to that as well. The characters don't do much and, like the clown-type guy, have a pent-up brooding presence - again, the track is like that. The fluid seeping into objects is like a whitewashing of things, before you can start again."We did get the car from Jaguar - I'm pretty new to the world of product placement. But it's the fifth video off the album and the budget was relatively tiny. And it was part of it for me: I'm going to get this and I'm going to destroy it."When you get a big opportunity like this, then why not push it a bit And people were receptive. Jay-Z loved the edit, and only really wanted one thing changed. Amanda [James at Final Cut] absolutely killed it. I told her I wanted it to be brutal and she nailed it. I didn't really want anything to happen in it - people don't do much. But what they do, Amanda captured it."

It sounded amazing on the day, as everyone had spent a few days learning their parts of the song and when they first played along, it was brilliant. They were louder than the playback."

Bespectacled 'one-man Coldplay' Gary Go is actually a clockwork man.
Mike Baldwin reveals this in his second video for Gary after the debut <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2009/01/20/gary-go%e2%80%99s-wonderful-by-michael-baldwin/">Wonderful</a> - although possibly something has clearly rubbed off on Mike after making the <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2009/06/04/royksopp%e2%80%99s-the-girl-and-the-robot-by-michael-baldwin/">Girl and The Robot</a> for Royksopp recently.
And it looks like they really did make a clockwork version of Gary. No, they really did...

"Having got to know Gary from the first video I made for him, it was clear he's a very unique and charismatic man. The idea for the Engines video came from the notion that I wanted to see 'what made Gary tick'. Literally.
"I knew he likes odd ideas, so I thought 'let's set up the idea that Gary is assembled, like musical equipment, before each show and then taken apart and travelled around on tour in custom made flight cases for his body parts.
"Simple idea, but I had no idea how we would make it as it seemed to need a movie or commercial budget rather than the one we actually had. The sweats began. Then a stroke of utter and complete brilliance happened that made me believe that this job was going to be blessed. It turned out that Gary's dad is the owner of a company that was effectively Jim Henson's old Creature Workshop. Genius. Not only that but they loved the idea and wanted to help as much as possible!
"That was an understatement, for they made a full-sized detachable Gary Go. A proper replica of Gary, that was so lifelike it was eerie. His arms came off, his head opened up...it was amazing. As soon as I saw what they could do, I dropped the idea of using any 3D whatsoever in the video and knew we could do it ALL in-camera.
"Perfect. I'm a big believer in actually seeing what you're shooting and I think that adds the charm and authenticity to the job. 3D and fancy CGI is incredible, but it still feels too synthetic.
"We had a great team, from Rain Li as DoP (who works with the legendary Christopher Doyle on feature films) to Rushes who made sure it all worked in post. Now it's time for a holiday. Somewhere there are no robots or machines."

Gary Go’s Engines by Michael Baldwin

Robyn is in love with her robot. And why not In Mike Baldwin's vid for The Girl And The Robot, he's a good-looking, hard-working chap.
It's a literal interpretation of the new Röyksopp single, and Mike makes that work partly by the simple yet effective device of the lovelorn Robyn not lipsyncing a single note in the whole video.
And Röyksopp themselves make a very rare appearance in the clip - as rather sleazy robot salesmen.

"The band were really specific about what they wanted for the video and the song dictated that too. One girl, one robot and one broken heart. I didn't want Robyn to sing as I wanted the vocal to seem more like it was all in her head. She is alone in her desperation.
"I liked the idea of trying to match her and the robot's movements, even though they were in different places - hence the use of a lot of match cuts and dissolves. I don't really like special effects and what-not, so needed to get everything in camera. So we built sets and made the robot from scratch with a genius model maker, Jack Kirby, who I deprived of sleep for ten days and kept him going with Haribo and tea. I think he wanted to kill me by the end. But it all came together in the nick of time...
"The band were also keen on the metaphor of fertility to represent loss and not being able to have a proper relationship, so we had the robot as a botanical worker who nurtured and tendered plant life, but wasn't able to function as a 'boyfriend'.
"It was a relationship doomed from the minute she walked into the showroom to buy him - where Torbjorn and Svein from the band make a cameo. I think this was their first appearance in one if their videos.
"Anyhow, it was even more of a team effort than usual, and everyone bust a nut to make it happen. Especially Magni Augustsson who made it looks absolutely beautiful, Toby Stevens who did wonders with no money, Charlotte who kept me sane and John Moule, who was brilliantly collaborative. And a killer song, of course!
"And if anyone wants a robot suit for parties or summer fetes, it's currently in the boot if my sisters car..."

Röyksopp’s The Girl and The Robot by Michael Baldwin

Paul Gore's first video in ages is a pop vid par excellence for The Noisettes' Sixties-ish pop. It's stylish and cinematic. The gracefully derelict dancehall at Alexandra Palace makes for a lovely location for the performance parts, and it's beautifully shot by Rob Hardy. Nice car too.

Scouting For Girls’ I Wish I Was James Bond by Youth Club

Michael Baldwin's latest collaboration with Travis has essentially a very simple idea. The band wanted to make the guitar solo in Something Anything the focal point of the video. That has been achieved very effectively.
But it's not just the concept, in which guitarist Andy wills himself to grow larger in order to perform the said solo. This works because it is beautifully achieved. It looks great, firstly due to Chris Sabogal's excellent photography, and then as a result of really painstaking post work - as Mike explains below.
It's not very fashionable to say something (or anything) nice about Travis these days, but frankly this is bloody good. Hats off to Mike and all concerned for their sterling work.

"The band wanted to make something that was based around the guitar solo, so we thought we would make Andy the guitarist bigger. In an attempt to do it all in-camera, we fed him growth hormones and tried stretching him overnight for a week to get him bigger but in the end it was a fruitless task and had to knock on the door of a post house to see if they could help.
"Glassworks said yes, thanks to the help of James &amp; Rich at Fallon (who were involved from the start as they are friends of Fran from the band, and were involved in the creative). And so after the more-complex-than-it-looks shoot - which involved lots of maths and scribbles to get exactly what we needed for the post - I moved into Glassworks for ten days with a small suitcase and toothbrush.
"It was a long arduous process as we had to rotoscope every shot of Big Andy. We didn't use greenscreen at all as it wouldn't have matched as well (and would have been a pain to work with in the small location).

"Anyway, Glassworks did an amazing job and I eventually moved home, where, rather worryingly, my girlfriend didn't even seem to notice I'd been away.
"I'll use this opportunity to once again thank all the crew, especially the generous and incredible Mr Sabogal, who all helped out as there was a lot of love involved in making this video happen."
