Christina Hendricks - the formidable Joan Holloway in Mad Men - trades the 1960s for some distant future in Jacob Gentry's FX-heavy new video for Danger Mouse and Shins' James Mercer's project Broken Bells.
But apparently things haven't really changed that much: its still difficult for a girl to get to where she wants to be in life - in this case, beautiful <a href="" target="_blank">Planet BB114</a>. Even if the girl happens to be an artificial life form, able to make some unusual sacrifices. Which makes this video unintentionally Pythonesque in parts. 
Jacob Gentry co-directed the low budget shocker The Signal and his outfit POP Films collaborated with Soapbox Films, who have worked on The Muppets web series (including Bohemian Rhapsody) and Toy Story 3.

"For This beautiful track, I wanted to make something with a simple and uncluttered narrative which could be captured with a great sense of cinematic scale" explains Bartleet. "The idea was to underline the key moments in the song with powerful, sweeping cable-cam while Liam (Fray, singer) delivered a cool and understated performance".

The Courteeners’ Take Over The World by Nick Bartleet

For the first single from up and coming album My Best Friend Is You (April 19th), Kate Nash worked with Daniel Brereton for the poppy Do Wah Doo. 
Shot at Brooklands Park in Weybridge, this retro, uber-camp romp portrays Nash as the cheeky air stewardess aboard the Airplane-style turbulence-prone jet, with her love interest played by Chris Hughes.

Hot Chip's new one, the debut video by talented comedian and uncanny Wogan impersonator Peter Serafinowicz, is a wish-fulfillment dream for anyone who a) would like to control a boyband with bolts of electricity streaming from their mouth, or b) like to be a disembodied head destroying all trace of manufactured pop nonsense by firing lazer beams from the eyes. And then, of course, there's c), for a nerdy looking band that want to be portrayed as fit young guys who make young girls scream.

A great video for Pixie and Mercury, and big beauty-glam breakthrough for Nick. 

"Gravity was about unfussy elegance. I wasn't interested in show-stopping special effects and clever clever post - just simple in camera techniques addressing the concept. So long as Pixie looked stunning I was happy - It was liberating, for once, to put beauty first.
"The best part For the red dot set-up, I wanted Pixie stock still, looking utterly sensational. Michelle Kelly did me proud with this massive, feathery, one-off Kristian Aadnevik showpiece. As soon as Pixie appeared wearing it with her black wig, there was a real buzz on set. Karen Alder (make up artist) did an amazing job on Pixie's jewel encrusted eyes - I love the way she works. 
"Under Eric Maddison's lights, swinging her dress around her, Pixie had the whole crew gathered round the monitor, cooing. It was incredibly satisfying."

Nick Bartleet pulls off a fine approximation of a classic Sergio Leone set-piece for Scott Matthews' new video: a desperate cowboy, in an awful predicament, is faced with a painful dilemma...
It's dramatic and well executed, and Scott provides a brooding, anti-heroic presence too. And like all spaghetti westerns, it wasn't shot anywhere near Monument Valley. Mind you, it wasn't shot in Spain either, but in the unsunny English Midlands.
"We filmed the video in one day, using a stunt horse, birds of prey, a stunt man suspended from a cliff face with poor access and relentless 30mph winds," Nick explains. "Suffice to say it was a challenging shoot for all involved, but with the opportunity to capture something so beautiful. A very worthwhile expedition."
And demonstrating his versatility, Nick has also just directed a more than usually hetero Top Gun spoof for MoS's <a href="http://www.pixelloft.com/starpilots">Star Pilots</a>.

Two young whipper-rappers Ironik and Chip get invited to a party in Max &amp; Dania's new vid - and before you can say "Helmut Newton" they're surrounded by a bevy of lovelies in expensive underwear dabbling in S&amp;M.
It could be the wrap party for Justify My Love, or a girlie get- together at Ellen Von Unwerth's - and M&amp; D keep it sweet. Here's the 'riding crop' version, with Elton in a gimp suit - joking!
Thankfully, there's also valuable input from commissioner Tim Nash on his unbeatable <a href="http://inyourface-atlantic.blogspot.com/">blog</a>, just below his eye-watering account of having tested a penis-enlargement potion. And I thought that's why we had videos like this.

It's undeniably well-made, but I think Nick Bartleet's video for Pendulum's Showdown is also highly problematic.
In a grim, underworld setting, young women have replaced fighting dogs to provide sport for an ugly bunch of baying males. The violence - actually performed by two experienced martial artists - is extraordinarily vicious, and the camera glories in it. The reaction of the watching pack is all too believable, and the viewer is essentially complicit in the whole degrading spectacle - part of the mob.
Nick Bartleet seeks to balance matters with an ending where one girl escapes - but that's not half as convincing as what precedes it. Still, it's popular! It was meant to be internet-only, but is now A-listed on MTV Dance in the UK and elsewhere.

Nick Bartleet on the making of his video for Pendulum's Showdown
"Pendulum wanted a video for their new single to feature a gritty fight sequence between two girls, but were open to ideas as to how this could be visually and conceptually achieved. Having listened to the track, it immediately generated ideas of a dark anarchic underworld fighting ring. Drawing parallels from the brutal world of dog fighting I wrote a hard-hitting and uncompromising script.
"With the band having loved the treatment, it was now important to strike the balance between the violent and bloody concept and what would have to become a more palatable video. Isolating one individual and focusing on her heroic struggle and eventual prevailing over the 'bad guys', helped to this end.
"I decided to cast Zara Phythian in the lead role, who I had worked with before on another promo and who is without question one of the most talented female martial artists in the country. The other main fighter is played by the equally incredible Helen Bailey.
"I wanted the fight sequence to feel quite raw, messy and non martial-arts inspired, with moments of clarity and precision but needed to use girls with a high level of skill and control to make the scenes convincing and with the training to endure the rigours of hard concrete and sub zero conditions with very few clothes.
"The video opens in a long corridor with women slumped against the walls, bloodied up. We enter the main arena, which is a vile, cess-pit of an underground warehouse. Bloodied and bruised women bark aggressively from cages, as men prod them through the bars. Our protagonist is forced into the spotlight as dirty men stand, throwing their cash around, making bets and obscene gestures. After a gritty girl / girl, Fight Club-esque battle with frenzied hair pulling, punching and kicking, our hero fights back!"
