This absorbing slow-burn of a video for New York rapper Homeboy Sandman begins with his phone conversations with various friends, family and associates around the city. Then it reveals that the recipients of those calls have something else in common. And it builds to a climax on a Brooklyn beachfront, and the fulfillment of the theme and title of the song, Monument.Director Pavel Buryak creates his story with a diverse cast of characters against the gritty backdrop of the city, with a growing sense of mystery that works really well with the metronomic precision of Sandman's rap. Each person possesses a small rock, which they bring with them to the beach. That's when the artist and director take things to the next level.It's probably been achieved on a small budget, but Buryak's video for Monument is really impressive - well considered and constructed, and leading to a satisfying, thought-provoking 'third act'.
