The Ellingon Kid, Dan Sully's sharp short film is set in a kebab shop, and built around a neat, almost Tarantino-esque device - and its been a big hit. After premiering at the 56th BFI London Film Festival in October last year it was picked up by Channel 4 and played after Shameless on Halloween night. Then Soda Pictures chose it to be one of six short films in their compendium 'Joy Of Six' which was released in cinemas across the country and is now available on DVD through Amazon. Vice then released the video on youtube for it's online premiere and it racked up half a million hits in under a week.. 
"The story of 'The Ellington Kid' was told to me about eight years ago," Dan explains. "I was making a music video for an artist who was from an estate on 'murder mile' in Hackney. He told me the story and I banked it, knowing that I might use it for a short in the future. Nearly a decade later, I worked out how to frame it and make it work as a short. The film I wrote came from that Eureka moment and was shot soon after.

"The production was headed up by producer Rob Watson who it took me about six months to find - when I met Rob I knew he was perfect, we sat down to talk about the film and ended up talking about our favourite films for a few hours. I'll always feel indebted to Rob, not least because he joined me on a tireless campaign to visit nearly every kebab shop in London when we were scouting for locations. I admired his desire to get his hands dirty-sometimes quite literally. At one point in filming I turned around and looked through the back room of the kebab shop to see him furiously hammering a metal pole through the middle of a frozen doner kebab. "The two day shoot itself was fantastic. It being such a concise script, we were able to focus on getting good performances from our talented cast headed up by Charlie G Hawkins and Hammed Animashaun. I personally want to thank everyone involved in the making of the film."

Like a classic Roxy Music album sleeve coming to life, Ferry Gouw captures the lounge lizard in all his stylish glory on new single You Can Dance, with Ferry (Bryan, that is) in his element surrounded by beautiful women. 
"Bryan wanted to portray the video as a band performance in perhaps the seediest most glamorous and exclusive underground club where beautiful people are all high on life," explains Ferry (Gouw).
"We always loved the idea of using Wilton's Music Hall as a location. It was just about pinpointing the kind of atmosphere we wanted, and it seems like we came to a common ground on, of all things, Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit. I think the smoke, and dirt, mixed in well with the gold and glamour and the dark undertones of the track. The slow motion confetti is also a nice little nod to Roxy's Manifesto"

Bryan Ferry’s You Can Dance by Ferry Gouw

Forget Avatar, here's an old-school stereoscopic 3D fest - and the second video in quick succession on Promo featuring a ViewMaster - for singer Andreya Triana, incongruously performing at an old-fashioned family knees-up. 
It was directed (and produced) by Keith McCarthy, who was one of the winners of the BBC New Music Shorts award last year for his treatment of Florence's <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2009/11/13/bbc-music-shorts-florence-the-machine%E2%80%99s-dog-days-are-over-by-keith-mccarthy/" target="_blank">Dog Days Are Over</a>, and shot in Kilburn's Working Men's Club.
"This whole production was pulled together on whiff of a budget and shot on two Canon 7Ds," says Keith "The props were the catering, the extras were the club's staff. The frozen sausage rolls were accidentally uncooked, and there was only one case of food poisoning."

J'suis Conne also features a donkey and the weirdly emotional sight and sound of a steel drum. It clearly wants to be in the Caribbean, but they opted for Black Island Studios in delightful Park Royal instead.

First the big pop one: Sneaky Sound System is a glossy, good-looking, well crafted, Daft Kylie-meets-2001 confection for a Aussie dance outfit creating infectious, very-big-over-there, soon-to-be-huge-over-here electro-pop.
Lots of cool LED, and some very cheeky costumes from stylist Hannah Edwards.


It's a delight. Emiliana takes us through The Art Of Living, and the worst thing you can say about it is this involves painting patterns on snail shells. It's almost certainly shot in Super 8mm and looks blooming marvellous, especially with James's graphics and effects work all over it. If Big Jumps becomes Emiliana's biggest record in the UK so far (it should be) this is going to be a big help.

Michael Baldwin's latest collaboration with Travis has essentially a very simple idea. The band wanted to make the guitar solo in Something Anything the focal point of the video. That has been achieved very effectively.
But it's not just the concept, in which guitarist Andy wills himself to grow larger in order to perform the said solo. This works because it is beautifully achieved. It looks great, firstly due to Chris Sabogal's excellent photography, and then as a result of really painstaking post work - as Mike explains below.
It's not very fashionable to say something (or anything) nice about Travis these days, but frankly this is bloody good. Hats off to Mike and all concerned for their sterling work.

"The band wanted to make something that was based around the guitar solo, so we thought we would make Andy the guitarist bigger. In an attempt to do it all in-camera, we fed him growth hormones and tried stretching him overnight for a week to get him bigger but in the end it was a fruitless task and had to knock on the door of a post house to see if they could help.
"Glassworks said yes, thanks to the help of James &amp; Rich at Fallon (who were involved from the start as they are friends of Fran from the band, and were involved in the creative). And so after the more-complex-than-it-looks shoot - which involved lots of maths and scribbles to get exactly what we needed for the post - I moved into Glassworks for ten days with a small suitcase and toothbrush.
"It was a long arduous process as we had to rotoscope every shot of Big Andy. We didn't use greenscreen at all as it wouldn't have matched as well (and would have been a pain to work with in the small location).

"Anyway, Glassworks did an amazing job and I eventually moved home, where, rather worryingly, my girlfriend didn't even seem to notice I'd been away.
"I'll use this opportunity to once again thank all the crew, especially the generous and incredible Mr Sabogal, who all helped out as there was a lot of love involved in making this video happen."

Attic Lights' Bring You Down by Michael Baldwin

The new one for Leon Jean-Marie is another good example of how Ross and Bugsy of OneInThree deliver fine, innovative graphic ideas.
It's a performance video with an interesting twist - or rather, wobble. The intriguing effect seen here comes courtesy of Kevin Atkinson - aka the <a href="http://methodart.blogspot.com/">Method Artist</a>. Kevin is a Canadian computer vision programmer and OneIn Three spotted his 'wobble' test on YouTube.
"We emailed him a month before saying we thought his effects were cool and would he like to possibly work on a music video at some point in the future," explains Ross. "Then when we heard the track we knew it would be perfect, so we called Kevin and asked him if he could come over in a week to make a music video. We flew him over from Ontario and he was brilliant: he was happy to stay in our weird flat, and did an amazing job."
It's clever - so we trust these guys will be firmly at the helm when it's used for an ad. Which is bound to happen.

Just because the Eighties gets referenced all the time in any number of cool vids, James Copeman isn't fooled. He's done his homework. He knows the truth.
James's new video for Mystery Jets, after the excellent Young Love, captures the real tacky awfulness of 98% of Eighties vids. The jackets, the hair, the blown-out lighting, the sheer bloody literal mindedness... Bleagh!
And just to top things off, MJ's Two Doors Down includes a genuinely awful Eighties saxophone break, like in a song by Spandau Duran - with James himself playing sax in the vid!
He clearly has no shame. Nice jacket, though...

Mystery Jets’ Two Doors Down by James Copeman

Ross Cooper and Bugsy Riverbank Steel aka OneInThree are back with a brace of new videos, one for Leon Jean-Marie (to be seen on Promonews shortly), and this one for those lascivious French dudes The Teenagers.
It's a loving homage to Eighties movie posters - and in particular the art of Drew Struzan - and considering it was created by Ross and Bugsy on a tiny budget it looks amazing.
Eight separate layers of full HD (shot on the HVX 200) were shot in a green screen studio - here (in lower picture, second and third from right respectively) are Bugsy and Ross in the studio with The Teenagers. 
The results were graded by Kenny Gibb at Moving Picture Company, and this graded footage then keyed and composited in After Effects by OneInThree at ustwo. The additional 3D and effects shots were a mixture of Maya &amp; Trapcodes Echospace plugin.

The Teenagers’ Make It Happen by OneInThree

Premiered at BUG 06, James Copeman's wrestling-themed video for N&amp;TW is a joy to behold. We particularly like Mr One Eye, but he doesn't get that much screen time.
James was also interviewed at BUG by Adam Buxton, who'd done his homework. Adam discovered that he has been known to respond to comments made about his videos on YouTube: his exchange for the Mystery Jets' Young Love vid with "Akyho" is a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/comment_servletall_comments&amp;v=qz-FoGp3p0s&amp;fromurl=/watch%3Fv%3Dqz-FoGp3p0s" _blank="">classic</a>. 
This one just gone up on YouTube so we'll see if James will be wading in once more. Let's hope so - it really is probably the best way of dealing with the videonerds.

It's a movie, it's a heist, a blag, and quite frankly a right royal f**k-up.
It's the latest by Mike Baldwin and a little comic gem, produced through his own outfit Red Rabbit Films so that very probably they could sink every last penny into the production. 
A wacky storyline, off-the-wall jokes, loveable incompetent goons and a sterling supporting cast confirm that young Michael has a decided knack for slightly bonkers comedy.

Infadels' Make Mistakes by Mike Baldwin

The new video for the Mystery Jets features a charming and colourful band performance while they lie flat out on the studio floor - courtesy of some completely visible hidden helpers and a mysterious contraption that moves the band in and out of shot. And teenage new folk hope and guest vocalist Laura Marling joins the party halfway through.
It was directed by James Copeman, who has quickly amassed a collection of notable work since he directed a £500 video for Noah And the Whale on Super 8mm in a pub some months ago. He's also directed a couple of Marling videos, all while holding down a day job making animation and motion graphics, currently at Box UK.
Young Love is certainly graphic, and motion graphics play a part from the very start when the titles are swept away by one of the white-suited helpers. That really does set the tone for what follows...

"I had a lot of contrasting ideas: retro performance video, synchronised swimming, split screens and typography.
"Then my friend Dan Sutherland showed me references from a mood board. One of the images was of a guy lying on the floor shot from really high up. It made think. Blaine the lead singer has difficulty walking without crutches. This way the the whole band could move and dance and perform together.
"At first I only intended to see the band members, and tried to avoid seeing the "helpers". But when it became obvious we would see them I decided to give them more of a role, like dressing the set, or even holding instruments and mics for the band.
"A welcome side affect of shooting down on the floor was the band members and Laura couldn't see us, so they relaxed infront of the camera and started to be silly and have fun, and I was able to capture a really natural and fun performance from them.
"I asked a good friend of mine Joseph Starsmore - who is a carpenter/fabricator/props/general Don Juan - to make me a sort of dolly that was comfortable to lie on, but also narrow, and with a handle so it could be pushed.
"He said 'OK', and few days later he came back with a big wooden dolly - it looked like a giant Victorian toy, all made of wood. Quite beautiful. I wish I had the space to keep one."
