Popcore are no strangers to the rock music video - and this effort for Biffy Clyro is blisteringly good. Shot on location at Chiswick House, Alex Barber's dynamic photography captures the band at the height of their pomp, and the grand scale online effects were devised by the team at Chimney Pot in Popcore's native Sweden.

Biffy Clyro’s The Golden Rule by Popcore

Robyn is in love with her robot. And why not In Mike Baldwin's vid for The Girl And The Robot, he's a good-looking, hard-working chap.
It's a literal interpretation of the new Röyksopp single, and Mike makes that work partly by the simple yet effective device of the lovelorn Robyn not lipsyncing a single note in the whole video.
And Röyksopp themselves make a very rare appearance in the clip - as rather sleazy robot salesmen.

"The band were really specific about what they wanted for the video and the song dictated that too. One girl, one robot and one broken heart. I didn't want Robyn to sing as I wanted the vocal to seem more like it was all in her head. She is alone in her desperation.
"I liked the idea of trying to match her and the robot's movements, even though they were in different places - hence the use of a lot of match cuts and dissolves. I don't really like special effects and what-not, so needed to get everything in camera. So we built sets and made the robot from scratch with a genius model maker, Jack Kirby, who I deprived of sleep for ten days and kept him going with Haribo and tea. I think he wanted to kill me by the end. But it all came together in the nick of time...
"The band were also keen on the metaphor of fertility to represent loss and not being able to have a proper relationship, so we had the robot as a botanical worker who nurtured and tendered plant life, but wasn't able to function as a 'boyfriend'.
"It was a relationship doomed from the minute she walked into the showroom to buy him - where Torbjorn and Svein from the band make a cameo. I think this was their first appearance in one if their videos.
"Anyhow, it was even more of a team effort than usual, and everyone bust a nut to make it happen. Especially Magni Augustsson who made it looks absolutely beautiful, Toby Stevens who did wonders with no money, Charlotte who kept me sane and John Moule, who was brilliantly collaborative. And a killer song, of course!
"And if anyone wants a robot suit for parties or summer fetes, it's currently in the boot if my sisters car..."

Gary Go is the new kid in town - thin enough to get into a tight Italian suit, and fit enough to do some serious running in Mike Baldwin's cinematic, retro-tastic and somewhat enigmatic video.
When not running, Gary is shadowed in the studio by a line of spec-wearing Gary-alikes. It looks great - shot by Denzil Armour-Brown - and Mike explains his interpretation of the theme of the song below. Gary is Go.

"The song has a very strong yet simple message about self-belief and picking yourself up when you're low. So I wanted to have a theme of identity running throughout. The running symbolises a 'journey' and the identical people were choreographed to deliberately 'echo' Gary's moves, which proved harder than I had imagined!
"I didn't want any dancing or specific choreography but more of a 'Simon Says' ripple of movement where they just copied what Gary did. Luckily we had Supple and his crew in charge of all that, so it turned out great in the end.
"All the scribbling in the middle eight are actually Gary's handwriting. I asked him to write down random thoughts that related to the song in some way. Luckily he has really nice handwriting!
"Building up a relationship with an artist before a shoot makes the world of difference to the finished video, and Gary was brilliant with his input and a real trooper on the shoot.
"I wanted it to be quite celebratory at the end, hence the extra people and the 'echoes' breaking away from Gary and the game show type signs. It's a feel-good video ultimately."

The harsh realities of growing up, as described by Glasvegas - The Jesus And Mary Chain with tunes - is eloquently reflected in Jamie Thraves's video through different age groups of youthful karate-ists, from cute five year old upwards.
Shot in Slough with the participation of several local karate academies, it's Jamie's first video in ages - and it's beautifully photographed by his old compadre, Alex Melman.
Jamie's been busy the past few months shooting his new feature, The Cry Of The Owl, starring Paddy Consadine and Julia Stiles, for BBC Films.
So great news that Jamie is back with this excellent video for a band that are hot to trot. Even better news that he's finally made a new film, several years after his criminally underrated debut The Low Down. And it's not Karate Kid 5.

Alex and Liane's new Ting Tings video is a corker: weird hand signs, clever transitions, touches of anaglyph 3D, kung fu, great art direction - and loads of sexual chemistry.

"We seem to have a lot of ideas based around hands - not sure why. Actually we've been sitting on the finger transition idea for a while, thrown it at a few people who didn't pick up on it.
"The shapes come from us waving our arms around and gesticulating a lot while we talk to each other, and our interest in the Neoists, who have also used the gesture as a symbol for the art movement since the Seventies.
"We reached the stage where we just wanted to realize the idea. We wrote some fighting sequences into it - which the band picked up on and expressed a desire to do some kung fu and wirework.
"It was probably a bit over-ambitious for a one day shoot and we had to drop quite a lot of the stunts because they were just so time consuming to get right - we shot 6 rolls - and follow precisely with a Technocrane.
"We did have some concerns about translating our mini DV test onto film but Will Bex was really encouraging and great to work with so we knew we were in good hands.
"Amanda James at Final Cut had a massive task with all the layers she had to work with but she is a whizz and between her and Marcus at Rushes, they really pulled it out of the bag for us."[/pay]
