Lucozade ‘Lite’ by Ben Newman 

Ben Newman's terrific promo for Wretch 32's Unorthodox depicts a bright and breezy side to inner London life through a series of vibrant, inventively intercut cameos. 
It has the uplifting quality of Ben's hugely successful DJ Fresh vid for <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2010/06/30/dj-fresh%E2%80%99s-gold-dust-by-ben-newman/" target="_blank">Gold Dust</a> - and like that, this is also beautifully shot by Steve Annis. Great edit by Thomas Grove Carter too. It's also the second Wretch 32 vid in quick succession out of Pulse Films after the more sombre <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2011/02/28/wretch-32s-anniversary-by-sam-pilling/" target="_blank">Anniversary</a> by Sam Pilling. Maybe he's working his way around to namesakes thirtytwo...

Ben Newman has been making very impressive low budget videos all year, for <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2009/01/07/bombay-bicycle-club%E2%80%99s-eveningmorning-by-ben-newman/">Bombay Bicycle Club</a>, <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2009/06/01/example-and-don-diablo-hooligans-by-ben-newman/">Example</a> and <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2009/09/25/example%E2%80%99s-watch-the-sun-come-up-devils-gun-remix-by-ben-newman/">Example</a><a>. </a>
So why should his Wiley video by any different Well, it isn't. Another excellent video, with great performances from dancers Shanie Ryan and Yasmin Ogbu, and a top edit. 
And Wiley even showed up (eventually) and performed. Take that.

"I had hardly anytime to prepare for this and thought simplicity was the best option. I wanted to do something that focussed on Wiley's performance without any narrative. I had the feeling that any sort of story would be lost in the filthy bass. 

"In typical style Wiley showed up extremely late but we got some time and covered as much as we could. It was great to work with him... and I thank the lord he showed up. 
"Special thanks again to US3 productions for housing the project and Mr Dave Miller who did a great job keeping up with Yas, the craziest dancer I've ever met. Also Andrew Rider who did an amazing job at putting it all together."

All about a young lady who doesn't need a gym to do her gymnastics. Great idea, effectively done - on another teeny budget.

"Example's label approached me to make a video for the remix of 'Watch the Sun Come Up' by Devils Gun. I'm a big fan of the song and have known the Devils Gun boys for a while. I didn't want to compete with the main video so decided to leave Elliot (Example) out of it and concentrate on a key character and simple narrative. 
"The budget was £2K so I couldn't really afford to be too adventurous but knew I wanted to make something clean and 'pop like' that would appeal to his fans. So the bendy, chav, dancing girl was born! 
"I found Erin Jamenson through the world champion free runner Tim Sheiff (who also features in the video). She is amazing and has really no fear. The location in Hackney is a place I've been obsessed about for a long while - it's beautiful and acts as an amazing backdrop for Erin to dance through. 
"I just need to say a very special thanks to Dave Miller who DoP'd - he did an amazing job and hired himself out at a rate that most runners would laugh at. He really loves what he does and it was great working with him and his crew. Also to US3 productions who came in at the last minute to help organise and manage production."

Superb, full-on riot of a performance video for Example and Don Diablo by Ben Newman. And what's more, he shot it on a stills camera.

"The video was shot entirely on the Canon 5D mark 2. I was extremely happy with the results, its amazing that we could shoot a video over a day with what is essentially a stills camera."

Ben Newman met Bombay Bicycle Club while filming a piece for BBC show 'Sound', as they played an underage show at the Camden Crawl. Suitably impressed, Ben (who's co-directed a few videos before now, as well as directing and producing music TV) pitched on the video for Evening/Morning and got the job.
And here's his completely charming and well-directed music video solo debut - with a chase sequence inspired by (although not necessarily similar to) the mighty Sabotage.
And Ben needed to use crucial persuasion as well as inspiration to get this done, as he explains below. The band (and the goons) provided the perspiration.

"It was important to me to represent the band in the right way as it was their first video. I wanted to produce something that looked beyond the budget, which was extremely tight.
"The base line reminded me of 'Sabotage' by the Beatsie Boys so I went for a chase sequence, which they loved. In fact I think the video has a lot of nods to Spike Jonze.
"The shoot was pretty tough. Early in the day I found out that the guitarist had shingles and would only be able to come down to the location for 20 minutes. And while on the phone to him, a group of kids ran off with the Panda head, which resulted in real chase. After catching up with them I convinced them the costume would be better used in the video rather than as their gang mascot."
