In conjunction with We Want More, the current exhibition of images from contemporary pop music, The Photographers' Gallery in London is presenting Girls Rule The World: Visual Pleasure, Sexual Politics and Image Control – a panel discussion looking at the shifts in authorship and control of image-making, especially for female pop artists, in contemporary music culture – on Monday September 14th.Â
Girls Rule the World looks at the thorny world of pop imagery and explores who controls such imagery - and the panel asks whether leading women artists (including BeyoncĂ©, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Nikki Minaj and Katy Perry, pictured above) can ever truly be said to be in charge of how they are presented.Â
Chaired by writer, cultural commentator and editor, Ekow Eshun, the panelists for the discussion include award-winning performer Little Boots, writer and broadcaster Miranda Sawyer, and Prettybird UK's Juliette Larthe, award-winning producer and executive producer of music videos by artists such as M.I.A., Kanye West and Rihanna.Â
The Girls Rule The World discussion is presented in association with The Guardian, and takes place on Monday September 14th at 7pm at LVMH Lecture Theatre, CSM, Granary Sq, King’s Cross, London N1C 4AA. Tickets are available at a discount for Promo News readers, using discount code PNFriends.Â
