Legendary music video commissioner John Moule dies
David Knight - 26th June 2026
John Moule, commissioner and producer of many acclaimed and award-winning music videos, has died at the age of 62.
Recently diagnosed with cancer, John passed away last Friday. He leaves his wife Clare and two children, Nancy and Michael. His family announced his passing in a statement released this morning.
"We are very sorry to share the sad news that John died on June 19th at St Josephs Hospice in Hackney. He was a wonderful dad, husband, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and friend who will be hugely missed."Â
In a long and distinguished career as a video commissioner, John was responsible for the making of hundreds of music videos, working with an astonishing array of artists - including Arctic Monkeys, Anna Calvi, Barry Manilow, Bicep, Bonobo, Depeche Mode, Dizzee Rascal, Franz Ferdinand, Hot Chip, IDLES, Jon Hopkins, M83, New Order, Placebo, Sam Smith and Tiga - and championing the careers of numerous music video directors.Â
Usually working with independent labels such as Domino Records, PIAS and Ninja Tune, John had been a successful music video producer - his work including videos for Pulp's This Is Hardcore and Cibo Matto's Sugar Water - before starting as a commissioner for Mute Records, working with the likes of Nick Cave and Depeche Mode, with whom he made a succession of acclaimed videos including Wrong and Personal Jesus. Â
John's achievements as a video commissioner were recognised on numerous occasions at the UK Music Video Awards. He won the UKMVAs' much-prized Best Commissioner award twice - in 2012 and 2022 - and was nominated for the award several more times.
Renowned for his singleminded dedication to his job, his devotion to the medium of music video, and dedication to offering opportunites to young directors, his recent commissions include promos for Fat Dog, Thundercat, Archive, Anna Calvi, Baxter Dury and The Hives. He was still working at the time of his death, just completing a new video for Bonobo.Â
Our heartfelt condolences to John's family at their tragic loss.
