Promonews - 23rd Oct 2024
One day to go to the biggest night of the year for music videos, in which 38 awards will go to the individuals who have created the best work in the medium of the past year, at the UK Music Video Awards 2024.
In addition, there will be a special award - the UKMVAs' Icon Award - for a director who has made an outstanding contribution to the music video artform over a number of years. And this year's recipient is a true great of music video direction, whose extraordinary creativity has graced music videos for three decades.
She is Floria Sigismondi.
Floria’s audacious music-video imagery and trademark style have made her one of the most acclaimed directors in the genre’s history. She has created imperishable videos for a remarkable range of artists over a 30 year period, for artists like Rihanna, Bjork David Bowie, Sigur Ros, The White Stripes, Marilyn Manson, Tricky, Fiona Apple, Christina Aguilera and The Cure.
Most recently, Floria’s video for Sam Smith featuring Kim Petras's Unholy, won Video for Good at the MTV EMAs, Video of the Year at the Juno Awards and the New York International Fashion Film Festival. It also received five nominations at the MTV VMAs including Best Direction and Video of the Year. Previously, Floria’s video for Justin Timberlake's Mirrors, won the MTV VMA Video of the Year as did her video for Sigur Ros's Untitled #1, at the MTV EMAs.
Spectacle, the first museum exhibition to celebrate the art and history of the music video, showcased Floria’s enormous influence. Her 1990s videos for David Bowie, Little Wonder and Dead Man Walking, have earned permanent spots in New York’s MoMA. She worked again with Bowie in the final stage of his career. In 2023, Floria was awarded at Cameraimagefor Directing Achievements in the Field of Music Videos.
Furthermore, the huge esteem in which Floria is held by her colleagues, peers, and the superstar artists that she’s worked with, has been really apparent during the making of the short film that will accompany the presentation of the Icon Award tomorrow evening. As one high profile contributor to the film says about Floria: “She’s a remarkable woman, and absolutely fantastic music video director… probably the best!”
So it's a special moment in the history of the UK Music Video Awards, to have Floria Sigismondi accept it's highest honour, the Icon Award, at this year’s ceremony.
