Rushes from Sinead O'Connor's iconic Nothing Compares 2 U video featured in Shoreditch art show

Rushes from Sinead O'Connor's iconic Nothing Compares 2 U video featured in Shoreditch art show

David Knight - 24th Nov 2023

An exhibition currently showing at a small art gallery in Shoreditch, East London, includes all the footage shot of Sinead O'Connor's iconic performance in the John Maybury-directed video of Nothing Compares 2 U.

Included in the group show RAGE at the M. Goldstein gallery in Hackney Road, E1, the complete rushes from the historic shoot - which took place in Paris in early 1990 - are presented at the exhibition on a vintage portable Sony TV, showing the footage in black and white.

Pippa Brooks, the exhibition's curator, says that she asked John Maybury to submit an artwork to the show that reflected the theme of RAGE, and that Maybury wanted to include the rushes of the Nothing Compares 2 U performance as a tribute to Sinead O'Connor following her untimely death in July this year.

Brooks decided to present the footage on the small Sony TV, for aesthetic and practical reasons, with the limited exhibition space in the gallery - a converted antiques shop - making it difficult to show on a larger screen. The exhibition also includes artwork in traditional and non-traditional media from Zoe Bedeaux aka T.I.P, Harry Freegard, Alice Mendelowitz and Owen Pratt.

The Sony TV plays a tape of all the telecined film footage from the shoot, including timecode. It features 13 complete performances by O'Connor of the song, and lasts more than an hour. Shown in this raw form - without any audio - the footage reveals how Maybury made changes to the basic 'head and shoulders' set-up, including making the lighting more dramatic, and making some key directorial decisions during the course of the shoot.

This remarkable piece of music video history can be seen at the RAGE exhibition at M. Goldstein this weekend (November 25th and 26th) and for the next three weekends (Thursday to Sunday) until it closes on December 16th.
