Shiny focusses on industry reviews for new music video directors during pandemic

Promonews - 23rd Apr 2020

Shiny, the network connecting the industry to new, diverse directors, is moving its focus online during the coronavirus crisis.

Formerly event-based and working in London, New York and Los Angeles, Shiny is now promoting online reviewing of young directors' work, judged by the leading companies in their industry network. Shiny will also be promoting the high scoring work submitting to Shiny, and publishing industry reviews.

"We looked into the heart of Shiny and asked ourselves: ‘what does every Shiny user want?’," says Caroline Bottomley, Shiny’s MD. "New directors want to know what influential industry people really think about their work. And we guess brand commissioners, production companies and ad agencies will be interested in reading what their peers say about up and coming filmmakers. So our focus during the pandemic is on the reviews, the written feedback on the new short films our industry supporters think are the best.”

The best videos will now be extensively promoted in Shiny’s industry newsletter and across their social channels. To illustrate the new approach, five winning videos and their reviews from Shiny’s Awards in February are already published. See them at the Shiny website, with reviews from Black Sheep Studios/BBH, Wieden & Kennedy, Thomas Thomas, 1st Ave Machine and many more. Current reviewers include Droga5, Iconoclast, Freefolk, Craft/ McCann and Nexus.

Shiny is also running a ‘Pandemic Half-Price Offer’, meaning submission price is just £17.50 for the duration of the crisis. Featured videos get the Shiny laurels to display, as well as the extensive promotion. Submissions are welcome from production companies and reps of new directors worldwide (defined as filmmakers who were first paid as a director within the last five years), and from new directors themselves.

Shiny, a not-for-profit company, will continue to seek out under-represented directors and to apply our quota system in order to level the playing field.
