Adele and Beyoncé are the leading artists in terms of nominations at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards. Both artists feature strongly in both the artist and professional categories, with Adele's Hello video, directed by Xavier Dolan, with the most nominations of all – seven, including Video of the Year and Best Direction. 

Beyoncé's Formation video, directed by Melina Matsoukas, has six nominations, while Drake's Hotline Bling, directed by Director X has four nomations.

Johan Renck's videos for David Bowie, Blackstar and Lazarus, are also recognised in the Professional categories. Vania Heymann & Gal Muggia's video for Coldplay's Up&Up is nominated for Best Direction and Best Visual Effects. Holly Blakey, for Florence & The Machine's Delilah, and FKA twigs are nominated in the Best Choreography category.
