Beyoncé's Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) directed by Jake Nava leads the way in nominations at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Nava's Single Ladies (right) is up for Video of the Year, and several more besides including Best Direction, as this year MTV has sensibly reinstated the professional categories - celebrating cinematography, art direction, choreography, editing and special effects as well as direction - that made the VMAs a proper US music video awards show in the first place.

Other multi-nominated videos include Jonas Akerlund's video for Lady Gaga's Paparazzi, the Francis Lawrence-directed vid for Britney Spears' Circus, and Simon Henwood's video for Kanye West's Love Lockdown.

Meanwhile the Breakthrough Video award features a feast of innovative work, from Ray Tintori's 'datamosh' clip of Chairlift's Elegant Utensil (left), Gnarls Barkley's Who's Gonna Save My Soul by Chris Milk, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Heads Will Roll directed by Richard Ayoade.

All the nominations to the MTV Video Music Awards '09 can be found at the VMAs website. The awards are to be held in New York on September 13th.
