straight 8 comes to Channel 4 – and Cannes

David Knight - 19th May 2008

Following a record entry of 175 films for this year's event, straight 8 will be premiering four of those entries on primetime British television this week for the first time. And in a now-traditional occasion, a baker's dozen of the very best entries will be shown at a premiere screening during the Cannes Film Festival this coming Thursday.

Four films from straight 8 2008 - like all straight 8 entries, made entirely in-camera with one roll of Super 8mm film and no editing - will be shown on 3 Minute Wonders from Monday to Thursday this week (May 19 - 22)  on Channel Four.

Two British, one Mexican and one Dutch film have been selected for 3 Minute Wonders slot. They are Looking For Marilyn, directed by Anna Blandford and Anna Valdez Hanks (UK), Piece Of Heaven, by Felix Alejandro Barbosa Vazquez and Yuri Misael Barbosa Vazquez (Mexico), Springlove by Herrjaapmans (Neths), and The Last Trip by Malcolm Finlay (UK). The films will be shown at 7.55pm each night from Monday to Thursday this week, just after the Channel 4 news.

Then this Thursday 13 entries from straight 8 2008 will be projected off their original super 8mm format for the first time at the Kodak pavilion in Cannes - the sixth successive year that straight 8 have premiered the pick of each year's entries at the Cannes Film Festival. The show takes place at 10pm local time. The screening is free, there are no tickets, but a festival pass is required.

The films include the four shown on 3 Minute Wonders plus nine others. For a full list, plus details of further straight 8 screenings during the summer (including at Cannes advertising week in June and Rushes Soho Shorts festival in London in late July) check the straight 8 website.
