The White Russian 'Cancer Knee' by Joseph Giffard Tutt

Rob Ulitski - 14th Dec 2021

Joseph Giffard Tutt directs a surreal promo for his music ensemble The White Russian.

Inspiration for the idea originated from the paintings of Belgian surrealist artist René Magritte, best known for his witty, thought-provoking images. The playful visuals blend everyday objects with protruding faces, whilst interacting with various elements of the landscape, like strumming pylon cables and disembodied hands beating a drum.

Each object in the video exerts its own right to consciousness, but also remains limited by the rootedness of its particular state or transience of its existence.

Joseph explains: "I kept seeing faces in objects, and once the idea hit me, it could not be ignored.” So he set out on his independently-made labour of love, shooting the footage for the Cancer Knee visual with a skeleton crew, then doing all the visual effects and editing work himself.

The result is a singular vision, a love letter to the era of music videos when visionaries like Michel Gondry loomed large - and made in complete disregard of any industry expectations.
