Toulouse 'Found' by rubberband.

Promo News - 7th Mar 2018

rubberband's video for Toulouse's Found is about a man who dies, and then comes back from the dead. Or does he?

It's a work that definitely enters another dimension. As our car crash victim returns home to his love, the real work becomes a 3D 'volumetric' one, somewhere between wireframe and laser-generated (like Radiohead's House Of Cards), that was created with the help of start-up tech outfit Depthkit. Cons

Consequently, Jason Filmore Sondock and Simon Davis (aka rubberband) were able to present explicit human intimacy in a completely new way...

RUBBERBAND:

"When we were approached by Toulouse to do a video for “found” we wanted to try telling an incredibly simple narrative. Obviously inspired by the song itself, we wanted to write a video about a man who is “lost” (in this case he dies) and then about his “return”. It was important that we (as the audience) can’t entirely tell whether this “return” is literal, metaphysical, or emotional, but that’s sort of the point because that’s sort of human’s relationship with death, it is quite uncertain.

"We also wanted to explore how to show sex and physical love without… actually showing it. Being representative instead of literal, or maybe something in between? That’s how we decided to shoot the consummation of their love and their reunion on a volumetric scanner. We worked closely with the guys over at this amazing volumetric video start up called Depthkit.TV to create this second, 3D world the film eventually occupies.

"Ultimately, we feel like we set out to make a quiet, beautiful film that meditated on the thoughts we have before death. Half on an old medium (shot like a rockstar by the incredibly Norm Li, CSC) and half on a new one. The idea to set up this dreamlike reality and then subvert it entirely (like death subverts life) with something that might look like a combination of the afterlife and a futuristic daydream. And then finally to confirm that in fact, our protagonist is dead, but have our audience still not completely sure what or which world they have been privy too during the video."
