Logic's song 1-800-273-8255 addresses the mental health crisis that plagues the developed world and the increasing number of young people taking their own lives - the phone number in the title is the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number in the US. Now Andy Hines' has directed a very fine video for the song, dramatising the struggles of a young man who has to deal with his family being unable to accept his burgeoning sexuality.

The video delivers movie-style production values, with standout performances from the actors, including some well-known faces: Don Cheadle stars as the young man's father, Luis Guzmán as his school basketball coach, Matthew Modine as the father of his first boyfriend. It's a sensitively told and utterly convincing story of a young man's decline into despair - in a country where acting on an impulse to suicide is relatively easy.

But what makes this a really good piece of work is that it's also about how otherwise decent people can harbour discriminatory views that without being challenged will destroy other people's lives. But they can change, and it's distinctly possible that people who watch this video will be positively affected by it too.
