Ruthless Cuts: Years & Years 'Worship'
David Knight - 2nd Aug 2016
Cut+Run's Sophia Melvin presents the latest Ruthless Cuts, the series that looks at how some of the most important music videos were made, from the standpoint of both production and the editing. And the new episode covers one of the standout videos of recent times, for Years & Years' Worship.
Sophia spoke to Berlin-based director Matt Lambert, who worked closely with Years & Years singer Olly Alexander and also top choreographer Ryan Heffington on the video which has been described as "Supercharged magical queer creative energy" by Alexander.
With Lambert, Alexander and Heffington all being gay men, the video has been hailed as a championing of gay culture within the context of a mainstream music video. Which was reinforced by the fact the other dancers and other crew members were also gay - and also Jamie O'Donnell, the editor of the video.
O'Donnell also talks to Sophia about how much free rein he was given by the director and the choreographer in cutting the long takes of choreography. A fascinating insight once again in the latest episode of this always-instructive series.
