Scouting For Girls 'Home' by Liam Hooper
David Knight - 6th May 2016
A schoolgirl's disappointment and yearning for exciting company, leads to a distinctly English trip into the imagination in the video for Scouting For Girls' Home, directed by Liam Hooper (who directed SFG's Rains In LA video last year)Â at 2050 Films.
Loosely inspired by movies such as Drop Dead Fred and Little Miss Sunshine, this demonstrates that the idea of the imaginary friend to blot out the harshness of the real world continues to be an intriguing and relatable proposition. In this case the video's posting led to 300k views and 3k reactions on its initial Facebook release.
LIAM HOOPER:
"The main focus of the promo is her isolation and how she’s cooked up this character to fill the void left in her parents’ absence. I wanted mature themes like busy modern families, loneliness and mental health told in with a child-like naivety.Â
"From the initial treatment, we attempted to steer clear of the expected visual and narrative points the song alone creates and explored the concept of home. Warner were very accommodating to our ideas and allowed us almost complete creative control.
"It’s her story and I made sure the production design reflected this; everything in her fantasy forest is something from her physical home – the Rubik’s cube in the kitchen, the shapes and colours on her sketch book, the clashing swords in her doodles.
"Initially, two leads of different age and gender, both seemingly unrelated, was a concern of Warner. I knew the success of the story was dependent on their chemistry, what each of the actors brought to the table and the way I directed their action. Everybody put their faith in Matilda, Jason and I to pull it off and I think they delivered phenomenally."
