Timbuktu 'Annie Leibovitz' by Måns Nyman

Cat Velez - 1st June 2015

Swedish director Måns Nyman arrived on our radar earlier this year with his video for Nause's The World I Know, about a dopey outcast that decides try his luck in a dance competition, and defies all expectations. But this experienced director had directed numerous other promos, ads and shorts before that one - including his video for Swedish rapper Timbuktu's track Annie Leibovitz, which won the Best Art Direction prize at the Nordic Music Video Awards last month.

In the video, he creates a playful, wonderfully crafty world where Timbuktu is frustrated at every turn by objects and people - like his girlfriend -  turning into flat, photographic versions of themselves. It's a reflection of our image-obsessed society - not just down to the Leibovitz lookalike in the video.

The delivery of the idea is charming throughout, fully meriting that Art Direction prize - won by Måns Nyman himself. And there's a winning performance too by his fellow Swedish director Alexandra Dahlström.
