Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello 'Señorita' by Dave Meyers
Mendes and Cabello, lost souls in a hot city, have a short-lived romance in this sun-soaked vignette by Dave Meyers, his latest collab with Camila.
This style of sexually-charged crossover is so well worn, it almost qualifies as a genre. See SparkNotes on Madonna, Drake, Xtina and Rihanna. But watching this video, which is by no means provocative, it may occur to you how safe previous incarnations of this genre have tended to be. Despite being billed (and widely misremembered) as sizzling, risqué videos, they now seem incredibly coy about their subject. Namely, sex. Strong eye contact does not a romance make.
In Señorita, Cabello sings about going “back to the hotel”, and then she and Mendes do just that. They have a one-night stand, and are confused about the encounter afterwards. Which feels oddly refreshing. Thanks to their chemistry, and a commitment to the subject of their song, the video sets a new bar for its form.
