Three Chord Society ‘On The Brink’ by David Aufdemdrinke

“The concept of the Mosaic is symbolic for being trapped in the repetition and later breaking out of it” explains David Aufdemdrinke about his ever-evolving kaleidoscopic promo for Three Chord Society’s On The Brink. “With long-shot performances/camera-movements set in a very dark, deserted location, this allowed me to create perfect mosaic like images to reflect this.
“After drawing and animating a 2-minute animatic of the first part of the video, I met the band for the first time and found out about their own personal motivation behind the song – including a disease of one of the bands members. “As it turned out, mine and their vision of the scenery and metaphor (breaking out of an ever repeating cycle) matched perfectly. So I set out to shoot, improvising a lot of stage-constructions with my DOP Jakob and our grip master Mario and figuring out ways to get the best quality out of our limited stage and camera possibilities (e.g. for the first shot, we couldn’t really move the camera without shaking, so we build some moveable green-constructions to move the actors under it). “The most crucial part in shooting was to get all the necessary match-cuts to be invisible in the later film, which required some training and exact timing from Ben, the lead singer. “I did the post myself and experimented with different ways to create 3-Dimensional Textures and Light-Shadings directly in After Effects and build all the rooms and “landscapes” from photographs I took in various locations. Other elements were added by shooting miniature stone-elements that were used in combination with the digital landscaped to form the cliffs and add some realistic details to the digital imagery. “The post took about one month, followed by sound design. A huge load of work, but it was worth it”.
