Villagers’ Ship Of Promises by Kathryn Ferguson

David Knight - 29th June 2010

New Domino signing Villagers gets a dreamy and evocative video for debut single Ship Of Promises from Kathryn Ferguson.

Kathryn is still a student at the RCA, but her art films and fashion promos - for fashion collections by Katie Eary, Richard Nicoll and for Dazed Digital featuring Lady Gaga have been featured at onedotzero, the Bird's Eye View Film Festival, Cambridge Film Festival and the 59th Berlinale.

Her first proper music video shows her fashion aesthetic translating impressively as three beauties escape into a summer idyll with Villagers (that's Conor O'Brien), who presumably can hardly believe his good fortune. Intoxicating stuff from a promising talent - commissioned by Richard Skinner at his new commissioning/consultancy outfit Skin Flicks.

Kathryn Ferguson on making the video for Villagers' Ship Of Promises

"When I first heard the song, rightly or wrongly I interpreted it as a song about escape. The early pounding rhythm that then built up into a pyschedelic crescendo made me instantly think about a run to the sea. I wanted to focus the video on three teenage girls all shackled in their teenage heads yearning and looking for escape.

"When I heard we'd got the commission, I had to work out how to create a feeling of epic escape with a fairly unepic budget Luckily the weather that week was ridiculously sunny so we were fairy confident we would be lucky enough to get a shoot in the sun. We spent most of the day running around the Sussex countryside and luckily by the time we reached the sea the light had turned a warm orange resulting in fairly epic silhouettes.

"I was really pleased with the casting of the three girls. They'd all met as strangers but by the end of the first day's shooting they had all really bonded, and I think this kind of comes across in the video. The day after the location shoot, we had to do the studio shoot. This was time-consuming as we had to experiment to create the allusion of levitation, spoon bending and the mystical coloured smoke. A lot of what we tried looked ridiculous and couldn't be used but it fun was making it. Then we had a week to deliver so the edit was fairly intense."
