Hot Chip’s One Pure Thought by Martin & Youle @ Trunk

David Knight - 17th Apr 2008

Hot Chip do have that art school rep, and collaborators Bevis Martin and Charlie Youle met at art school in Sheffield eleven years ago. They are fascinated by discarded images. On their website they say: "we have spent much of our eight years together rummaging through charity shops and car boot sales seeking out the traces of the intimate histories within popular culture in postcards, scrapbooks, defaced record covers, copied tapes and other cast-offs."

And there is certainly something obscurely familar about this video, like it's inspired by some trendy postcard series from 1981, or a video from the same period, or Roy Lichenstein - or all of the above.

Bevis and Charlie have also designed record covers, including Hot Chip's Boy From School, and made a low-budget video for The Young Knives recently. For this one, they recruited the good graces of animation house Trunk, who deserve much credit for bringing this one home in one piece, so the world can ponder it's points of reference...
