Kyary Pamyu Pamyu 'Harajuku Iyahoi' by Hideyuki Tanaka

David Knight - 12th Jan 2017

J-Pop princess Kyary Pamyu Pamyu returns with another of her remarkable music videos, combining kiddie cute with the deeply trippy, bursting with a level of visual imagination that puts 99% of Western pop videos to shame.

Directed by Hideyuki Tanaka - also the director of her previous Sai & Co video - it's a 21st century, VFX enhanced musical showstopper for Harajuku Iyahoi, a celebration of Tokyo youth cultural hub Harajuku (the songtitle is essentially 'Hooray Harajuku'), where multiple Kyarys are joined by dancing tree trunks, giant polka dot hands, walking hat masses, and much more.

And there's a Russian theme too, as the centrally featured version of Kyary is decked out in Russian folk dress - with accompanying serious, almost-grumpy face.

It's weird, and its brilliant. It's what Busby Berkeley would have been doing if he'd had access to motion capture
