A month ago, not many people&nbsp;had even heard of Zoom. Now it's&nbsp;crucial to our daily lives, and&nbsp;directors Erin S Murray and Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux have made the inevitable leap with the communication tool while the&nbsp;world lives in lockdown:&nbsp;they have directed the first Zoom-based music video.The primary accolade goes to Oakland artist Thao Nguyen - aka&nbsp;Thao &amp; The Get Down Stay Down. According to <a href="https://variety.com/2020/music/news/zoom-music-video-choreograph-thao-get-down-stay-down-phenom-1234571411/" target="_blank">Variety</a>, the pandemic crisis scuppered the planned shoot for her song Phenom, and her manager suggested that they shoot an alternative using Zoom. It was shot over the course of several hours on March 29th and released just a couple of days later.&nbsp;A cast of eight dancers appear on the Zoom grid around Nguyen, performing a routine choreographed by Murray (she has worked on Ed Sheeran and Charli XCX videos as a choreographer and now branching out as a director too). They each perform the same routine in their own home spaces - but then they begin to 'interact' with each other through the Zoom screen grid.&nbsp;&nbsp;In many ways the video is also something of a throwback to the first flush of YouTube, and early crowd-sourced videos like <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfBlUQguvyw" target="_blank">Sour's Hibi no neiro</a>. But&nbsp;Schaulin-Rioux has also had recent experience of making a crowd-sourced video, for regular collaborators <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2019/03/14/pup-free-last-jeremy-schaulin-rioux-pup/57760" target="_blank">Pup's Free At Last</a>, featuring fans of the band attempting to perform a song that the band had written but yet to record.&nbsp;It was certainly not inevitable that the the first Zoom video would be great, but in fact they knocked it out of the park.

Dan from Bastille battles the outside world in Another Place, directed by&nbsp;Anna Radchenko &amp; Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux.&nbsp;In an avant-garde bedroom set, Dan is sat with sand pouring from his hands, lonely and isolated. The huge windows behind him offer a glimpse into the outside world, but he isn't interested. Alessia appears outside, like&nbsp;a giant looking through a dollhouse, and taps the glass. This sends a shockwave through the environment, which starts to deteriorate and spill black blood from its walls. Dan is thrown into action, trying to keep a sense of calm whilst the outside world is trying to break him out of his bubble.&nbsp;Unique and inspired, the German Expressionist references and design elevate the concept, and Dan's&nbsp;performance as a man losing his sanctuary is breathtaking.Great work across the board on the video shot in Toronto, with the heavily pregnant Radchenko directing remotely&nbsp;from London, and&nbsp;Schaulin-Rioux on set.&nbsp;

After their great &#39;origin&#39; videos Guilt Trip and Sleep In The Heat, PUP and Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux now flash-florward 40 years,&nbsp;to the band&#39;s dotage, in a grimly believable dystopian version of Canada.KIDS finds the band,&nbsp;playing themselves in heavy old man prosthetics,&nbsp;broken up and forgotten, with each member living out their own futuristic worst fears (both for their own lives and the world&#39;s). When Stefan, their long lost frontman, is discovered in a backwoods trailer, the newest member of the family forces them to confront their legacy, friendship and mortality.Schaulin-Rioux&#39;s tenth video for the band is as heartfelt as all the previous ones, with excellent detail on very unequally distributed technological advancement.&nbsp;It&#39;s characteristically bleak, and over the top, but also surprisingly elegaic.But surely, this can&#39;t be the end, can it...?

It&rsquo;s been a while since crowd-sourced videos were all the rage. So it&rsquo;s a delightful to see that our favourite Canadian punks PUP have got together with their fans to create this wildly experimental and very entertaining communal effort orchestrated&nbsp;by regular collaborator Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux.&nbsp;In January 2019, three months before their new record release date, PUP put out &quot;The Zine is Over Vol. 2&quot; a printed magazine of jokes, photos and art. It also contained the bass chords and lyrics to a new song, &quot;Free At Last.&quot; The band requested friends, fans and other bands to try their hands at writing and recording an arrangement of this new song - before anyone had ever heard it.In the end they received over 260 totally unique versions of their unreleased song. From metal to ska to eastern european hip-hop to a professional Opera cover, no two versions looked or sounded alike.For the Free At Last&nbsp;music video, they wanted to create an instructional version on how to play their actual version of it, but then of course we started messing around with some green screens and adding in everyone&#39;s cover versions and everything went off the rails like usual.

What if the moment before you die, instead of watching your life flash before your eyes, you&#39;re instead given the chance to re-experience any moment you&#39;ve ever had? Which would you choose?That&#39;s the premise of Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux&#39;s gripping video for Tom Walker, as we join the singer-songwriter and his fellow doomed passengers on a stricken aircraft. That when the passengers&#39; entertainment screens start to become divine portals allowing their users to look back on the lives. It&#39;s ingenious, thought-provoking and, with very concise storytelling, it&#39;s superbly executed.This could have made a memorable half hour&nbsp;episode of The Twilight Zone&nbsp;but&nbsp;Schaulin-Rioux&#39;s&nbsp;makes it work in four minutes.&nbsp;

The fifth in a series of narrative music videos for Canadian pop singer-songwriter Lights Poxleitner-Bokan&#39;s concept album Skin&amp;Earth &ndash; which are themselves companion pieces to a graphic novel series, written and illustrated by Lights herself &ndash; is a tale of revenge and hell-hath-no-fury,&nbsp;directed by&nbsp;Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux. &ldquo;From the minute I wrote We Were Here&nbsp;I couldn&#39;t wait to draw that part of the comic,&rdquo; Lights has said. &ldquo;And from the minute I drew that chapter, I couldn&#39;t wait to make the video. This is a song about owning the time we have on Earth, and the video captures that whole vibe perfectly.&rdquo;

When Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux co-directed the video for PUP&#39;s Guilt Trip, he really started something.He concocted an origin story for the&nbsp;Canadian punk band starring young actors Finn Wolfhard and Malcolm Craig. Wolfhard went on to become&nbsp;one of the stars of Stranger Things; now&nbsp;Schaulin-Rioux&#39;s directed the video for Wolfhard and Craig&#39;s own real band, indie-rock outfit Calpurnia, which they started after appearing in the Guilt Trip video. &nbsp;This is a one-take video shot on Super 16mm that features each member of the fourpiece band, starting with Wolfhard, walking through the city at dusk. And each one has a shadow that is playing the instruments that they play in the band.Despite&nbsp;a small window of time and very&nbsp;limited number of takes, Schaulin-Rioux&nbsp;and DP Cole Graham have pulled off this tricky one-shot idea with aplomb. It&#39;s a peach, and as he says below, making the video wih his Guilt Trip stars&nbsp;was a proud moment for&nbsp;Schaulin-Rioux.

Almost three years down the road from their brilliant, myth-making origin story in <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gnntMvMgx4">Guilt Trip</a>, PUP are back with longtime collaborator Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux and the original cast for a continuation of the story.With Finn Wolfhard gaining a considerable level of fame since the Guilt Trip video (in case you&#39;ve been living under a rock, he has a major part in Netflix smash hit&nbsp;Stranger Things)&nbsp;so&nbsp;you&#39;d be forgiven for thinking this sequel was just capitalising on his popularity. The truth is that&nbsp;the cast, director, and band are clearly just enthusiastic about making great videos, as Wolfhard himself pointed out in <a href="http://www.vulture.com/2016/11/stranger-things-finn-wolfhard-pup-sleep-in-the-heat-video.html">an interview with Vulture.</a>This clip explores the life of young PUP as they tour the country, pick up a companion along the way. Chandler Levack and Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux&#39;s brilliant spin on a band-origin story&nbsp;for <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/videos/2014/07/04/pup-guilt-trip-chandler-levack-and-jeremy-schaulin-rioux" target="_blank">PUP&#39;s Guilt Trip</a> - their second for the band, following the also-great vid for <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6UaplvdnWM" target="_blank">Reservoir</a>&nbsp;- has been a slow-burning viral hit ever since its release a year ago. Both the band and the directors have gained deserved critical acclaim as a result, most recently with the video included in this year&#39;s&nbsp;Saatchi &amp; Saatchi New Director&#39;s Showcase.&nbsp;So just how would they approach the long-awaited follow-up?In fact, Chandler and Jeremy&#39;s video for Dark Days&nbsp;is&nbsp;both a sequel&nbsp;and distinctly different, encapsulated in its very first shot &ndash; it&#39;s the same as the final shot of Guilt Trip, the band&#39;s van driving away&nbsp;through sleet, but this time animated. What follows is an engrossing episodic&nbsp;account of the band&#39;s progress from when they entered that battered old van to today, told in cartoon form.But this time all the stories in the video are true, apparently - and they certainly do spend a lot of time in that dear old van. &quot;We got them drunk and made them tell us!&quot; say&nbsp;Chandler and Jeremy. &quot;The last PUP video we directed got us on Promo News&#39; Top New Directors (2014) list and was also nominated for an UKMVA for Best Rock Video. It screened in BUG and was recently selected for this year&#39;s Saatchi &amp; Saatchi New Director&#39;s Showcase at the Cannes Lions. So we wanted to follow it up with something different!&quot;&nbsp;They have certainly done that, and whatever the truth of it, they&#39;ve&nbsp;also achieved another fine document in myth-making - with the considerable assistance of Toronto-based Solis Animation. And it&#39;s hard to think of any video made at any time where the directors&#39; love of the band comes shining through. All these guys totally rock.
