Lana Del Rey teams up with Anthony Mandler for the gorgeous promo to her next single National Anthem. The endlessly photogenic Ms Del Rey channels both Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy looking every inch the American icon with red hot New York rapper A$AP Rocky as her JFK.
The epic seven minute-plus promo was shot in New York, graded to evoke Super 8 footage from the early 60s with spot-on styling from Johnny Blue Eyes and brilliant make-up and hair from Pamela Cochrane and Anna Cofounder. Like a Ralph Lauren ad with some edge.
“Anytime you’re dealing with the American Camelot of the Kennedys, you’re dealing with a packed powder keg,” Anthony Mandler told MTV News. “And really, what Lana was trying to do — this was her concept, she came to me with it, and I kind of dug it out with her — was really look and explore an archetype. Just like Shakespeare wrote ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ and that became the archetype of the forbidden love story.”
