The Staves ‘Mexico’ by Frater
Thursday, 17. November 2011 - 2:42 pm

A beguiling performance by the girl-folk trio The Staves of their song Mexico is augmented by projected animation in this video by directing collective Frater – and it works beautifully.
The driving force behind this video is the Staves’ performance, and the real challenge for the directors was to shoot everything in camera, with no post – a first for them. The animation was synced to the music and projected onto the surfaces around them.
An alluring piece that captures the Joni Mitchell-esque spirit of the music and the band.

if you’re gonna set up a rival community/commenting site.. don’t you think it’s a bit brash sharking for business on here?

i too thought this wonderful, i also thought the robin foster promo was amazing……but why didnt the ‘promo collective’ think the robin foster promo was good enough to join them. I admire what ‘the promo collective’ are doing but they talk about open this and open that yet arrive on this site as darkened faces no one can see giving judgement on certain music videos and saying nothing on other videos. Is this a little cruel. Will the open adoration of certain videos make directors feel loved and wanted with rejected directors feeling a little bewildered. I talk nonsense of course. But i can only assume ‘the promo collective’ has been set up as an anti-promo news that goes against the idiot comments and negative slander and faceless comments. Isn’t the ‘promo collective’ simply doing the same by keeping faceless and heaping praise on select promos and ignoring others. What about the stunning katy perry video? what about the miniscule budgeted binary video?
Any group of people who sets up a site in support of artists and directors and a genre of moving image can only be applauded and to keep that up day in and day out can also be applauded but enough of this selective BORG inspired ‘come join us’ schtick. why not tell EVERYONE on these pages to join?

that’s exactly the point, what we don’t need is people who think they’re more qualified than everyone else to pick and choose who goes into an online community/(clique). whether or not people like a lot of the stuff that goes up here, it’s a fair overview of what’s going on, the inviting your favourites through here to your own new club is ridiculous.

they’re literally just nicking the credit lists. weird.

anon sums it up and he sums up the true hero to us all, mr david knight. Now again, let me say how much i admire the ‘promo collective’ and all it wants to do in the world of music videos but you cannot help but love david knight, his dedication and the fact he lets the new floria sigismundi sit alongside a tiny promo made by 2 guys in france about a body being thrown to sea made for peanuts and no, i am not the director of said video. David knight lets the king sit alongside the farmer all day and every day and then allows freedom of speech which can be good or bad depending on wether red or blue is your fave colour. Within this freedom of speech he lets us watch some truly awful videos and some vids that change minds and touch hearts but he provides a platform and its always the decision of the director as to wether the promo is put up here. Now of course it gets tricky because people talk of quality control on this site.
I think the simple ethos of ‘the promo collective’ whereby its a select few members and new members can only join if selected by fellow members, its this ethos that makes me feel slightly fluttery and a bit ill. It simply has shown how bad quality control is in all forms of art because at the end of the day who has the right to decide? One man, two men, three men a thousand men?

We have mucho respect for David Knight and we don’t see what we are trying to create as any sort of rival to Promo News.
At the moment the point is not to pick and choose what goes on our site, what we are putting on there right now is only a matter of personal taste, if we like a video that we see somewhere we pop it on there.
The intention is that more like minded members sign up and post what they like up there, or work that they are proud of.
Then we step away from it, no longer post things up and just manage who goes on there.
It will not be a ‘select few members’ as you mention above, we only allow people through the net that have provided correct information about themselves. (that means no Star Trek names unfortunatley)

oh go away. like minded people/ anyone with an email address. if you’re gonna start an idea you should probably figure that stuff out.

some bloke who picks and chooses to his own personal taste doesn’t make for a thriving community blog. you’ll just piss everyone else off. i hope you’re spike jonze or god.

the wanting to remain unknown but the concept being that you have to use a real name to encourage openess also seems a little flawed.
